Cure for Load Shedding

All kinds of appeals are being made by our leaders to save electricity such as; switching off of one bulb in each home, extra lights in the markets and showrooms, no ironing, adjusting the ACs’ thermostats at 26 degrees etc. However, they seem to fall on deaf ears.  The reason – because neither our so called leaders have the vision nor the influence. Nor they themselves set an example for others to emulate. On a single call from  Mao Tse Tung  in 1948 the entire Chinese people stopped use of hair oil saving billions for China. In the 60s no place in China - house, hotel or a public place - used electrical fans after midnight. But I suppose --- then they are the nations and those are the leaders.  In our case what to talk of appeals even ordinances, orders and curfews meet with scant respect they deserve. I believe sometime back Government had ordered markets to close by 9 p.m.?!!

Anyway, I have a scheme to save electricity and tremendously too. There are about 20 million TV sets in Pakistan, each consuming about 150 watts per hour. Government should ORDER firmly (tolerating no nonsense) no TV or cable transmissions other than 6 p.m. to midnight. That is six hours out of the present 24 hour transmission time. Country will save 3/4th of the electricity consumed by the TV sets, which could be up to 350 megawatts per day !!!  Remember in the 60s we had just 4 hours of TV – 6p.m. to 10 p.m.  The added advantage will be that we will be spared the nonsensical political commentaries, talk shows, analyses and dis-information apart from being able to see once again the Pakistan Flag fluttering with National Anthem at the TV signing off time daily.
