VIP Culture by Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

Alas, the day had to dawn when the ordinary took on the VIP physically and did not let Rehman Malik and another MNA board the plane which had been delayed for more than two hours allegedly due to the late arrival of the VIPs. Not keeping time seems to be part of our VIP culture. The more important a VIP the more late he arrives for the occasion. Why don’t they try to behave modestly and care mor Click here to read Full Article

A silver lining had started shimmering when the govt. negotiating team was reported to have agreed to accept 5 out of the 6 points of TIP agenda. The most important issue – Rigging in the Elections – was resolved by appointing a three member judicial commission to look into the rigging allegations of 2013 elections. Judges Inconvenience by Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

It is highly deplorable that the honourable judges of the Supreme Court had to traverse a considerable distance on foot to reach the court due to the sit ins (dharna) of PTI and PAT. The honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan had, therefore, to issue orders for the clearance of Red Zone of all such hindrances and obstructions that were causing great inconvenience to the judges. If nothing else the long marches by Imran and Dr. Qadri have dawned the realization to all that not all is well with our rulers and the electoral system that elects them. Talks are also rife that apart from the electoral reforms the life of the assemblies should also be curtailed to four years instead of the present five years. In a TV Talk Show someone also mentioned about the presidential form Click here to read Full Article

I am almost 84, was 17 and a first year student when Pakistan came into being. Took part in Pakistan movement, saw, heard and even photographed Quaid e Azam (and Miss Fatima Jinnah) when Quaid addressed us the students of Edwardes College Peshawar on 18 April 1948 and the next day at Islamia College (now Peshawar University). Now that the holy month of Ramazan is ending (has already ended in some parts of KPK) please allow me to share with you all a column which speaks volumes about our blind following of some of our religious ritual equally led by the ‘blind’ clergy. Click here to read Full Article

A lot is being done to improve the road communications and mass transportation systems in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad and of late Karachi. Billions and billions are being spent on these projects which the critics think are not that essentially required and the huge amounts could be utilized elsewhere on much more badly needed projects to ameliorate the lot of the masses. Anyway, now th Click here to read Full Article
The Dollar Slide by Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

One wonders whether it was an admission, a revelation or a confession when the PM disclosed the other day that the govt. had to put in a Herculean effort to thwart the downward slide of the dollar in December 2013 and stop it at Rs. 98 from its peak value of Rs. 111 as it could go down further to Rs. 50 and 60. He said that it was done to protect the interest of the exporters who would have suffe Click here to read Full Article

Electoral Reforms by Col. Riaz Jafri (Retd)

In our elections foul play starts right from the scrutiny of the nomination papers of a candidate and goes on all the way up to the counting of votes and compiling/announcing of the results. It is done at times with t Click here to read Full Article
