Allegation against Allegation

The recent most statement by the interior minister Rehman Malik was much annoying rather than surprising. In a prompt response to Punjab chief minister’s speech at bhati chowk, the minister said “stop critising/alleging president Asif Ali Zardari or else documented proofs of corruption obverse to Sharif brothers will be brought into the media.”

Being the interior minister of the country, it must be the prime duty of Rehman Malik to apprehend the corrupts. And to perform his prime duty, he is provided with all the laws and the law enforcement agencies. If he also has the documented proofs, then what makes him disinclined to catch up with the alleged criminals?

Let us together think of the reason. It is an attempt to blackmail the opponent. The message from the minister is either stop displaying us or you will also be exposed.

It has been a shameful convention of our politics that instead of proving themselves innocent, they counter allegation with an allegation. From myriad instances I can remember one talk show where Senator Pervez Rasheed and Mr. Hayat hiraj were fighting each other for who is greater in corruption. In that particular tv program they were answering allegation with another allegation to the antagonist. This is the way it goes in our politics.

Take the example of energy crisis. Most of the electricity consumers pay their bills on time. Government institutions are regularly given away funds to meet their electric liabilities. Even then WAPDA’s circular debt went upto Rs.470 bn! Is there anyone who can ask the heads of government institutions where did they embezzle the funds allocated for electricity bills? Is there anyone who can ask the WAPDA official what they did to the money received from the consumers? No there’s no one out there to ask because if they dare to, they may himself be alleged for more serious crimes.

From their attitude it can be concluded that our political leadership only pretends to be patriotic, however, practically they are misanthropic. Most of them are as corrupt as they have no eyes to watch and no tongue to speak. In fact one’s breach of trust is the immunity to the other for his corruption.

Now the question arises here is what people can do in this connection? We can simply expose them. Let the history repeat itself. Let the 8th February 2008 occur again. We will again politically bury the rotten eggs as we did to the dictator and to his allies.
