Maulana – The Protector

In Sura Al Baqrah Ayah 286, please see below, the word ‘Maulana’ has been used for the Almighty Allah (swt) as the Protector. How far are the present day Maulanas justified in taking up this title for themselves?

And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector,so give us victory over the disbelieving people (286)
