Musharraf COAS
In a section of the press a news appeared that Chaudhary Nisar said that Musharraf became Army Chief because he prepared Nawaz Sharif to do so. No, Sir, I do not think so. Nazaw must have had some other consideration. He could not afford to have a strong headed Ch. Nisar in his cabinet and his real brother General Iftikhar as the army chief. The combination would have been too dangerous for any PM. He, therefore, chose Musharraf over the senior most General Iftikhar and to compensate Gen. Iftikhar, who had opted for retirement in the army tradition of not serving under a junior, appointed him as the Secretary Defence "“ a post though senior to the COAS but toothless.
