Insulting slogans (Published 4.6.2009)
Isn't it time to bury the senseless, insulting and cruel slogans designed long ago by our ruling aristocracy who keeps on sitting pretty after having taxed the people dry to the point where having lost all hope people are opting for suicide- en masse? Roti, kapra aur makan (bread, cloth and roof)? The fact is that more Pakistanis, both in term of number as well as ratio of population, today are living beyond absolute poverty, with another substantial portion of population gasping for survival, than ever before in our 62 year checkered history.
More Pakistanis are hungry, homeless and cloth-less then ever and yet our ruling elites have en massed wealth that our banks just don't have the capacity to keep and luxuries, incentives and perks that could shame rulers of the richest nations on any given day and at any given moment.
The reality is much uglier than the make-up soaked, high-flying, smooth-talking, honest-appearing and cunningly articulate ruling elites or their chamcha-brigades want to make us believe night after night during senseless academic, philosophical and academic harangues on TV shows.
Lets start with the minimum legal monthly salary of Rs 6,000, rough 75 dollars, in a country thickly populated by poorest of the poor who are taxed barbarically to pay for the luxury of their rulers. Every single member of parliaments, one National and four provincial, as well as Senate costs the people of this poor country tens of millions every year. Every bureaucrat costs no less. Education, wheat, rice, pulses, edible oil, petroleum, milk and all shades and hues of other mafias and profiteers are allowed to milk the people dry with full impunity as and when they like.
The rulers keep on passing the burden of taxes almost entirely to the poor and salaried segments of the society intentionally keeping such tax-rich sectors as agriculture, stock market, real estate outside the tax net simply because rulers don't pay the tax themselves. In this land of the pure only the poor pays the taxes while rich are pampered to go all the way laughing to the bank.
Just how much does the government care about the people is obvious from the fact that despite minimum salary law not only the private sector but also the government just don't pay Rs 6,000 monthly salary to millions of labourers working in inhumane conditions in every part of the country. With profiteers reigning supreme and loot galore all around and rulers becoming accumulating more and more wealth by each passing minute tell me something honestly: Can a person earning six-time the minimum monthly salary can afford to buy even 80 square yard plot anywhere in the country not to mention even dreaming of buying a house?
Our rulers have become so indifferent to the core that they don't even realize that with cost of living touching the unaffordable level as is a person with three school-going children and a wife can not even afford to live even half decently if living on rent. He and his family like and tens of millions of other families like him are doomed to live a life of perpetual roofless uncertainty while rich continue enriching themselves with additional plots, palaces, farms, expensive cars and myriad other items of luxury with each passing minute.
Islands of luxuries surrounded by sea of abject poverty; body-eating hunger; absolute deprivation; inhumane exploitation; unbearable financial, social, economic, cultural and political injustices are bound to be drowned and vanished without leaving the least sign of their once-existence. Stop insulting the intelligence of the people. It's about time to stop bamboozling the people with senseless, insulting and cruel slogans that has caused irreparable harm to the people. Senseless slogans don't impress the people anymore. Its time that the ruling elites should either learn to back up their words with deeds or just refrain from opening their pretty mouths altogether.
