Relief Funds

Pakistanis have always risen to the occasion and donated generously in cash and kind to alleviate the miseries of fellow countrymen in times of natural disaster and calamity. October 2005 was probably the most shining example of it when Mansehra and Muzzafarabad were literally flooded with not only all kinds of provisions, foods, medicine, tents and shelters but also by the young volunteers including doctors and paramedics who came in hordes from places as far as Karachi.  People did it again in 2009 for the IDPs of Swat, Buner and Bajaur and donated generously and most willingly.  Surprisingly that spirit is not visible now in spite of repeated appeals by the government and ministers. especially when the present floods are rated to be the worst floods in the history of Pakistan. Much more loss of life and damage to the property has been done by this natural calamity than ev er before. Why is then the nation so indifferent and unresponsive? From my interaction with the general public, I find it to be a case of trust deficit. The political governments – federal as well provincial – do not enjoy the confidence of the people, who think that the money donated by them will not reach the people it is meant for. Like it or not, they still want army to handle the distribution of funds, commodities, and other supplies. Isn’t it sad?

Reply:   Performing Haij-e-Akhbar by donoting to Relief Funds!

I would like to respond to Relief Funds for the benefit of the millions of our brothers and sisters, who became victims of the worst floods in the history of Pakistan. This great nation would rise again, but all kinds of help is needed now and on the spot to alleviate the sufferings of our fellow countrymen. In other words, Haij or Umra performers can postpone this Islamic duty for another year, but the victims of this disastor and calamity cannot wait even for another hour. They need your help now and your Haij money can be used for your Haij-e-Akbar,Inshah-Allah! Furthermore, I urge to our leading politicians Zardari and Nawaz Sharif to do the same from their ill-gotten wealth, which should be returned to the nation for the rehabilitation of these affected citizens, and re-construction of the infra-structure by building dykes around the canals and bridges as soon as possible. I know that I am knocking at the wrong door, because they are deaf and dum to such appeals in the past. I am afraid it would not make any difference this time. They are used to sleep in their comfortable beds in their concrete villas and they would not eat less than a seven course meal even under this unfortunate situation of our beloved country. I wonder what else can stir their conscience to do the right things for Pakistan and its people! I rest my case, because Pakistan and its brave and proud people would survive again. My hat off for our armed forces and relief workers for helping the nation in distress!!! With humble prayers and salaams to all, Sincerely, SRA Shah (The Netherlands)
