Last week, India was scene of huge demonstrations in New Delhi and other Indian cities provoked by the brutal gangraped by six men of Damini, a 23-year-old physiothrapy student on a moving bus in India’s capital city of New Delhi. Similar protests you will never see in the United States which is more pre-occupied liberating women in Muslim-majority nations by invading and occupying them.
According to Indian government estimates, a woman is raped in India every 20 minutes. However, independent women rights NGOs believe rape incident are much higher than that. In New Delhi, known as the “rape capital of India”, the incidents of rape rose from 572 in 2011 to 661 by the end of 2012. Of the 256,329 incidents of violent crime reported in 2011, nearly 228,650 (or 90%) were committed against women.
Some people could blame Hindu religion for such violent acts against women which like in Judaism, are believed to be created only to serve the male gender. The Hindu caste system also play its racist part behind these heinous crimes. Damini, who did not belong to the lowest Hindu caste (Dalit) is being exploited for political reasons to some extent. “Sexual violence is suffered by Dalit women systematically as a means of punishment, control and dominance by men of higher castes,” says Shenali Waduge.
In the United States where it’s customary to have sexual relationship between the opposite and same genders from an early age – tops the rape chart according to government estimates followed by Africa and India.
In 2010 study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that 1.27 million American women were raped – equivalent to one woman every 29 seconds – and 5.1 million were stalked – equivalent to one woman every 7 seconds.
According to National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey 2010 ; 18.3 % of women in the United States have survived a completed or attempted rape. Of these, 12.3% were younger than age 12 when they were first raped, and 29.9% were between the ages of 11 and 17.
In Israel with its capital Tel Aviv home to 280 Jewish brothels, rape is applied as a racism tool against the non-Jewish population, Native Palestinians and Sudanese and Eritrean refugees. Israel’s Authority for the Advancement of the Status of Women, 4,406 rape cases were reported in 2011, 78% of them by the women themselves – about 12 reported incidents per day.
Punishment for rape, proven in a religious court of law, is death in all three Abrahamic religions. However, the definition of rape victim varies in Deuteronomy (Bible) and Islamic Shari’ah. In Bible, rape is considered a major crime only if a man rapes a married woman – punishable with death. However, if the victim happens to be an unmarried woman – both are forced to marry each other.
In Islam, a rape is rape – without distinction.
