Benazir named Zardari as an interim leader: Copy of Will released

Assuming Benazir's Mantle?

Bhutto's husband, under attack, releases her will and hints he might want to lead Pakistan himself.

By Michael Hirsh | Newsweek Web Exclusive

Benazir Bhutto's controversial widower, Asif Ali Zardari, defended his position as temporary head of her Pakistan People's Party and left open the possibility that he might seek the nation's prime ministership as the mourning period for his wife neared its end this week.

Shortly after his wife's assassination on Dec. 27, Zardari named his and Bhutto's 19-year-old son, Bilawal, party chairman and indicated that the party's prime-ministerial candidate would be PPP vice chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim. But in a phone interview with NEWSWEEK on Monday, Zardari suggested he might be interested in the job himself if the scheduled Feb. 18 national vote brings the PPP to power, saying that he has the widest name recognition in the party. "There is no one single personality [in the party], apart from me, who anybody even knows," he said. "No one else has a consensus."

Faced with a whispering campaign at home that he might not be Bhutto's legitimate heir, Zardari directed that a copy of her handwritten political will be made publicly available to prove that Bhutto named him as her successor. In the will, a copy of which was obtained by NEWSWEEK, Bhutto addresses "the officials and members" of the PPP and writes, "I would like my husband Asif Ali Zardari to lead you in this interim period until you and he decide what is best."

Bhutto also praises the officials and members of her party, saying no leader could have been prouder of their "dedication, devotion and discipline" in the struggle for "a Federal, Democratic and Egalitarian Pakistan." Later she adds, "I fear for the future of Pakistan. Please continue the fight against extremism, dictatorship, poverty and ignorance." (Click here to read the full document.)

Two longtime associates and loyalists of Bhutto's say there is no doubt it is her handwriting. "I know her style," says Mark Siegel, her longtime friend and Washington-based representative. "She wrote this document." The will, dated Oct. 16, 2007, was written the same day Bhutto sent a letter to President Pervez Musharraf that identified three people she said were planning to assassinate her upon her return to Pakistan after seven years of exile.

Pakistan is scheduled to hold national elections this month after a delay of six weeks prompted by rioting in the days following Bhutto's assassination. Many election observers, including Bush administration officials, believe the PPP will dominate the voting, in part because of the anguish over Bhutto's murder. "There is almost an expectation that that's likely to happen," says a senior administration official.

But U.S. officials, already concerned about Pakistan's stability in the wake of widespread protests against Musharraf's rule, worry about Zardari's prominence in the party. A former playboy and polo star, Zardari is considered a mistrusted"”and divisive"”figure in Pakistan. He is widely blamed for the tangle of corruption that strangled and cut short Bhutto's terms in office. "The PPP has the potential to be far more than the party of the Bhutto family. It had been putting itself forward as the legitimate reform party," the administration official said. "There is some concern if the party reverts back to a somewhat monarchial-style system." Syed Farooq Hasnat, a scholar at Washington's Middle East Institute, said that Pakistanis "are not ready for Zardari."

Zardari, asked whether he was now interested in the prime ministership, at first demurred. "In order to be prime minister you have to be a member of Parliament. I'm not running for this Parliament at the moment," he said. But Zardari added that the party leadership would ultimately decide who the PM candidate should be. "We're not saying I am [one] or saying I'm not," he said. He also argued that he had earned credibility by having gone to prison on what he says are trumped-up charges of corruption. "The fact of the matter is that there's nobody in the party with my seniority who's been to prison for 11 years," he said.

Asked how he could justify the rather feudal practice of making a modern political party a family legacy, Zardari noted that he was following his wife's lead. "She herself started her career as co-chairman with her mother. After her father was assassinated, she and his wife become leaders."

Dear Lady
Had it been a personal matter of Bhuttos, Zardaris or Bhu-radaris...(since now even his son's surname is a hybrid), SO YES WE WOULD NOT POKE OUR NOSES as you have very crudely put it.
But the problem is it is notr their personal matter. When PPP claims to be a national party, people of the country have a right to 'poke their noses' as to who best represents the country 'democratically' . Zardari and Bilawal can manage all her prperties, bank accounts, servants, clothes etc. and this can all be willed but writing a will that so & so shall be leader after me (;the democratic icon') is itself a non-democratic act and religion has got nothing to do with it....

Lastly, in a healthy discussion, such expressions,'poking your nose' should preferably not be used....

wassalaam (instead of good bye)

Benazir Bhuttos blunder: The "will" generates more questions than answers

February 5, 2008 by Moin Ansari

Despise him for his politics, but the PML Q always has great one liners and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi probably has the best speech writers in the campaign. The other day he said the PPP stood for "Property, Plunder and Palaces". Benazir Bhutto's will generates more questions than answers.

0) Is the will a fake?

1) Why was Ahtizaz Ahsan or Makhdoom Amin Fahim not chosen as successors?

2) The presence of the will displays the dynastic feudal nature of the Bhuttos. A political party is not a dynasty. Those harping for democracy must first bring democratic institutions into their own political parties

3) The will displays a total misunderstanding of the feelings of the people. Designating Mr. Zardari as a successor is the height of absence of political acumen. Benazir was hated by the army. Mr. Zardari is despised by the entire country.

4) Will of person cannot over right will of God. So all questions of property have to be decided under the constitution of Pakistan and the faith of the person. As such the will is useless except for business purposes. It is said the PPP account has more than 125 million Dollars in it.

So this means that the PPP will now be led by Mr.  Zardari who is a very unpopular figure in Pakistan. When the PPP does not emerge as a popular party, he will blackmail the country by trying the "slash and burn" strategy that he perfected on the death of Benzir Bhutto.

Continuation of the policies of Benazir Bhutto means that Mr. Zardari will attempt to hand over A.Q. Khan to the IAEA and hond over Pakistan's nuclear program to joint British-American control as espoused by Benazir Bhutto.

What better choice than the gentleman who couldn't give his family name to his wofe, has added another surname to his son...surely he is the person to truly represent our country.

At least western world will accept him as most acceptable and compromising...

Isn't this a joke with Pakistani people that

1. The lady (May God forgive her) never took her husband's family name as her sirname and in fact kept her father's sir name.

2. The name 'Bhutto' has been added to the son's name just to rebrand son as a saleable product to Pakistani people.

Are we talking about a leader on merit or we just marketing Bhuttos or are we bluffing the Pakistani people that they are all bhuttos hence carry the same charisma. As per all laws of the land and our culture, both of them were not Bhuttos. So we do they want to carry this name? If they have any mettle to prove as a person, they should keep their proper sirnames as Benazir Zardari & Bilawal Zardari.

& this surely classified Mr. Asif Zardari as a person of true moral values and character that he is happy if his family members adopt other sirnames...He is surely the true heir of throne.

The gentleman:
1. Whose wife never took his family name as her sirname.

2. Who has added a Bhutto name to his son's name just to rebrand his son as a saleable product to Pakistani people.

3. Who used PAF C130s as his personal planes for transporting horses.

surely has to be the best person to lead Pakistan. All these things show him to be a realy person of substance and character.

Why she wrote this letter,  is not mentioned in this letter.

"I fear for the future of Pakistan, Please continue the fight against extremism, dictatorship, poverty, and ignorance"

and after that this phrase

"I would like my husband asif ali zardari, to lead you in this interim period until you and he decide what is best"

now from second and first paragraphs, you can see clearly it is not mention anywhere why she is nominating zardari.

secondly, even if we assume that she nominated zardari, even then she has nominated him for interim period, not on permanent basis.

So even if party decide that this WILL is original even then they have the right to find some other person instead of Zardari or bilawal, as making bilawal chairperson is same thing as making zardari chairperson.
