VATICAN CITY - A Lebanese prelate Tuesday denounced before a synod of Vatican bishops those using the Bible [Old Testament] in Israel as a pretext to justify annexing Palestinian territories and denying the rights of the Palestinian people.
"For Jews in general and especially for certain religious fundamentalists, the Bible is considered a sort of land register carving out Israel's borders," said Guy-Paul Noujaim, Maronite patriarchal vicar for the diocese of Sarba, according to a transcript of his remarks distributed to the press.
Many Christians also "take to the letter" the idea of land promised by God to Israel, Noujaim said.
"Some persons take this literally, even today," Noujaim warned.
"Some among them claim the Palestinian people have no right to possess territory in Palestine," he told the synod, which is gathering between October 5-25.
Noujaim advised that: "Catholic hermeneutics on this must urgently be clarified, so that concerned believers may receive the Bible in its totality and in its truth."
Jews and Christians share a body of holy texts, which the Jews call the Torah and Christians the Old Testament.
Jews do not recognise Jesus as the Messiah and do not consider the New Testaments as divine or holy to them.
Seeing Jesus as a false Messiah, Jews are still awaiting the first coming of the Messiah.

Jews knew from their books where the Messiah will come and what he will be like. That is the reason the Jews were in the arab lands, especially makkah and madinah. The Jews even used to say (when abused) to the abusers to wait until their messiah comes whome they are waiting for there. When the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wasalam) came, then they rejected him. Now when the Dajjal will come, then they will follow him.
