"Let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong; they are the ones to attain felicity".

Assalaamu alaykum
Here I am providing a link to an Urdu booklet entitled "Islam Pandhravin Sadi Hijri Mein" which can be subtitled as "Islam in the 21st Century" written by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan.
In this booklet, Maulana suggests that in the first century after the Hijra Islam faced the challenge of "Shirk" and in the present age Islam is facing the challenge of "Ilhad," meaning atheism. In the first century, "Shirk" was rooted out within the first quarter of the century and then the Muslim Ummah governed and influenced much of the civilized world for about a millenium. In contrast, Muslims in the present age have failed to address the challenge of "Ilhad" despite having spent far more resources in the form of lives and wealth. Maulana then goes on to suggest the reasons why earlier Muslims were so successful within such a short span of time and why present-day Muslims have been failing to positively impact the world on a large scale for the last two hundred years despite enjoying abundant human and material resources.
