Today Editors, Jeff Gates, Raja Mujtaba and I were in the AF-Pak region over the last couple of weeks. Jeff and I are Vietnam veterans, Raja a decorated combat veteran, tank commander, from the India/Pakistan war. We met dozens of Pakistani military, including nearly all of their highest ranking retired officers, from Admiral Sirohey, Chairman of their Joint Chiefs of Staff to General Alsam Beg, Head of the Army to Lt. General Hamid Gul, former head of the ISI. In our party were our other Veterans Today contributors, BG Asif Haroon Raja and BG Raza Ali, of “Charlie Wilson’s War” fame.
Today, I received an email from Admiral Sirohey. His office is lined with memorabilia from a long career of service, service as an ally and friend of the United States. Sirohey and the rest were America’s most stalwart allies during the Cold War. These were the real allies that helped us bring about the downfall of the Soviet Union. I was honoured to be among them. Today Admiral Sirohey is scheduled to attend a rally protesting the illegal kidnapping, brutalizing and conviction of Dr. Affia Siddiqui. America’s best friends in Asia, the finest soldiers in the world are horrified at what we have done.
Can it be that bad?
The Bush administration, when it saw its “War on Terror” wasn’t getting enough suspects, hired drug cartel members and criminal elements to kidnap innocent civilians to fill our secret prisons. Yes, we actually did this. In this case, we kidnapped a mother with 3 children, tortured her for years, murdered a small child and then charged her with attempting to murder her captors after years in a secret prison on Bagram Air Force Base.
Every soldier on that base, everyone who has served there has to live with the dishonor of this act until something is done. Remember when America, after World War II painted the people of Germany with the stain of guilt for not knowing about the death camps? Tell me what is different here? We didn’t know that drug lords and gangsters were stealing people off the street to fill our prisons with “terror suspects” so Bush/Ashcroft and Cheney could crow about their successes?
If you didn’t know before, this is what all the secret “torture memos” were all about, not real terrorists, but innocent people we “bought” as though we were slave runners of old.
A few years after we bought our phony terror suspects, tortured, raped and brutalized them, most were released. They had committed no crime other than to be standing on the wrong dark street corner when the druglords working for Bush were out hunting “meat” for America’s gulags.
Dr. Aafia had to be convicted, had to be jailed and silenced. The crimes against her and her children were so heinous; only a kangaroo court in America, a country whose news is orchestrated by the Islam hating MSM/Corporate media and powerful Israeli/AIPAC lobby would have the audacity to bring her to trial.
Do we need to review the case? Remember the OJ case? He was released because of a glove not fitting. Dr. Aafia was shot by the “translator” during her “debriefing.”
She has a Doctorate from an American university. She comes from a country where everyone speaks English. “If the translator doesn’t fit, you must acquit!”
Do we now call a person with a cattle prod a “translator?”
When the My Lai massacre happened, I was with a Marine unit less than 50 miles away. All of us who were there then, not so many are around any more, carry the stain of that dishonor and have for decades. I can talk of honor or service but all people see is babies and their mothers, shot to death, lining the bottom of a ditch.
It is a matter of honour.
There are no “secret prisons” and nobody is tortured without someone knowing about it. We are all responsible; I don’t care if you are serving in Iraq or Afghanistan or anywhere around the world, active duty, reserve, National Guard, retiree or veteran. We are nearly 30 million strong. Many of us don’t have much, memories, wounds, a small pension and our honour.
Our silence strips our honour away.
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was not a terrorist. The newspapers lied, we all know why. Either she is guilty or we all are. Better to destroy her than to arrest those guilty of real crimes, arrest people some of us voted into high office.
“We were just taking orders.”
Where have we heard that before, Nuremberg? It isn’t just this one life. We already killed over a million people in our ill fated invasion of Iraq.
Fog of War. We know better, everyone with eyes to see knows better, know it now. Then why are we still acting like criminals? No more lies. We are at war, a war with real enemies. We have so little, our short lives, our families and what we believe in.
Did a tiny crippled woman, illegally imprisoned for years try to murder a room of FBI, Special Forces and Blackwater/CIA operatives?
I can tell you this: If I get my butt kicked by a 100 pound woman in a wheel chair, you won’t see me in front of a jury in New York City crying for my mama.
The only possible answer is that everyone involved in the trial of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui is a liar. Nothing else is possible. I know why they lied, they were ordered to “for the good of the service.” Was there something in the oath involving “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America unless told to lie for the good of the service?”
What are we protecting?
Once the public learns that we are buying phony terror suspects from the worlds largest drug dealers, people we are protecting, people flooding our streets with narcotics, there might be problems. Best not let the public know why we never found those weapons of mass destruction, that yellow cake uranium, those mobile bio-weapons labs or why our continual search for Osama bin Laden keeps failing.
The deal of the century, destroying an innocent life and earning the hate of a valued ally, all to stand behind the lies and rhetoric of America’s “dark age.” We would be lucky if it were only every citizen of Pakistan that was enraged at us for this travesty. It is worse, far worse.
Who are the real terrorists? In Pakistan, Admiral Sirohey, friend to half a dozen American Presidents is heading to a peaceful protest. What can we, Americans, claim? If kidnapping, torture, rape and covering it up by letting the victim rot in prison isn’t terrorism, I don’t know what is.
We should be thankful for that seat on the UN Security Council. We may need it for more than covering up for Israel. The next nation facing sanctions for international crimes may be us. All that stands between us and being cut off from the world is our veto. All that is keeping an entire administration from War Crimes trials is the Bush administrations withdrawal from the International Criminal Court at The Hague.
Why is President Obama allowing the outrages of the Bush administration to continue?

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has said that he had apprised Pervez Musharraf of Dr Aafia’s disappearance when he was the chief executive.
Talking to The News, Jamali said that being the prime minister, he brought this issue into the notice of the president, but Pervez Musharraf did not discuss the issue with him. He further said that the decision to hand over Dr Aafia to the US was taken at the rulers’ level.
The former prime minister’s attention was drawn towards the recent address of Pervez Musharraf in London, in which he swore before God that he knew nothing who Dr Aafia was, when she was picked up and to which country she was handed over. Jamali said that he would not comment on the former president’s statement in this regard.
He said that the situation was not conducive for Pervez Musharraf to jump into politics. The former premier said that the language Musharraf had used in his address in London about Nawaz Sharif was regrettable and his conversation style was also not good. Jamali said he had never used unparliamentarily language against his own worst opponents. Jamali said that during the tenures of the PPP and the PML-N, Yousaf Ramzi and Amil Kansi were handed over to other countries.

PARACHINAR: Three Pakistani soldiers were killed in a Nato helicopter attack in Kurram Agency, a border region with Afghanistan, security and military officials said, apparently the fourth such strike in recent days.
The attack by two Nato helicopters took place early in the morning in Teri Mangal village in Kurram Agency, an ethnic Pashtun tribal region on the Afghan border.
“The helicopters shelled the area for about 25 minutes. Three of our soldiers manning a border post were killed and three wounded,” a senior security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
He did not say whether Pakistan responded to the strike.
Pakistan on Monday expressed outrage at violation of its airspace by Nato helicopters in Afghanistan over the weekend, saying it would consider “response options” to any future incursions.
Two Nato Apache helicopters killed 30 insurgents on Pakistani soil after a rare manned pursuit across the border from eastern Afghanistan late on Friday, after militants attacked a remote Afghan security outpost in Khost province, Nato forces said.
On Saturday, two Kiowa helicopters returned to the area and killed another four, Nato-led International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) said in a statement in Kabul on Sunday.
Monday saw another possible border violation, with six militants killed in Kurram, a Reuters reporter in the area said. But an ISAF spokesman said it was “near the border,” rather than in Pakistan.
ISAF said in a statement issued late on Sunday that helicopters crossing into Pakistan were following its rules of engagement.
The rugged border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan is seen by Washington as a critical battleground in its fight against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
So far 21 strikes have been carried out by the US drones in September, the record number in a month.

Almost whole Pakistan has condemned conviction of Dr. Aafia
Following two press clipping would give you an idea that almost all Pakistani’s are on board against political decision of US courts to sentence Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. All leading legislators of almost all major parties participated to endorse protest as a token disapproval. PPP, PML N, JUI F, MQM, PML Q and small groups participated on 27-09-2010. Jamat e Islami and Tehrik e Insaaf are protesting in almost all cities and towns of Pakistan. Mr. Munawar Hasan and Mr. Imran Khan have held big meetings to lodge protest.
Moreover a TV program “Capital Talk” dated: 28-09-10 was represented by Mr. Hamid Mir on the issue, protest and endorsement of political parties against unmerited conviction of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. The program represented excellent discussions and sentiments of all major parties regarding Drone attacks, intrusion on NATO in Pakistani territory and killings of Pakistani citizens inside borders of Pakistan. The program is worth quoting those Musharraf apologists that are saying that Mush did not sell Dr. Aafia or other Pakistani citizens, and program proved that Mush group is speaking US language and proves criminal actions of Mush and company. In this regard Marvi Memon of PML Q held press conference and defended Mush’s coward actions. Remember this is same Marvi Memon who accompanied with Mush in all overseas travels and hotel stays; moreover she was number one in receiving travelling allowances or expenses on foreign tours.
It is a great moment that 99% peoples of Pakistan have rejected on records and loudly to condemned drone attacks, NATO violations of borders and killing of Pakistani citizens. Unjust conviction of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui is a metaphor, a sign of resistance against tyranny, condemning US imperialism, human rights violations and using United Nations and US courts system to work as political entity. NA stages walk to show solidarity with Aafia

ISLAMABAD: Despite the existing heated political atmosphere, the National Assembly was unanimous on Monday in demanding the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
All the Lower House members held a solidarity walk outside the Parliament House in the leadership of opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to register a protest against conviction of 86 years imprisonment to the Pakistani neuroscientist by a United States court.
The proposal of the solidarity walk was given by Chaudhry Nisar during the Friday session to express the solidarity with the family of Dr Aafia Siddiqui that the Parliament stands with Pakistan’s daughter and will bring her back to the country.
For the solidarity walk, National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza adjourned the proceedings till today morning with the consent of the House.Later, the legislators from both sides of the isle joined hands to stage the walk and walked from gate-1 to main gate of the Parliament House where some speeches were also delivered before the media.
Though the main leadership of the treasury and opposition covered a distance of 50 steps, a group of women parliamentarians walked upto the building of the Supreme Court that is adjacent to the Parliament House.
Earlier, speaking in the National Assembly, Ch Nisar said that he raised the point for holding the walk to show the solidarity with the family of Dr Aafia Siddiqui that nation stands behind her. He said it was not a political issue but a national issue and the National Assembly showed its solidarity with the family of Dr Aafia Siddiqui and condemned the sentence of 86 years to the daughter of the nation.
Responding to a point raised by the leader of the opposition, Interior Minister Rehman Malik assured the National Assembly that apart from legal aspects, the case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui would also be handled at political level. He said the PM would be taking up the issue at an appropriate level.
The minister said he would also speak to the US attorney general and FBI director on the subject. He said it has been decided to send a delegation of women parliamentarians to the US to protest the issue. “Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, Sister of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, will also form part of the delegation,” he added.
He said the government also wanted to write a letter to the US asking for her repatriation. The minister said Dr Fauzia Siddiqui, however, has desired that lawyers of Aafia should be invited to Pakistan and a further line of action should be taken with their consultation.

A short, silent MNAs’ march for Aafia

ISLAMABAD: It was only a short, silent march by the National Assembly members on Monday though ruling alliance also joined the opposition-called protest over the last week’s sentence by a US court of 86 years’ imprisonment for Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
However, a debate on the issue sought in an adjournment motion tabled by some members of the opposition PML-N, which has been on the agenda for several days, was again put off until Wednesday.
The government agreed with Leader of Opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan’s proposal that all house members hold the march in a show of unanimity on what both sides called a humanitarian issue and their demand for Dr Siddiqui’s return to Pakistan.
“We fully endorse it,” Interior Minister Rehman Malik said, calling the convict, who is US citizen, a “daughter of the nation” after the opposition leader repeated his Saturday’s proposal for the march over what he called a “a great excess” that he said should not go unchallenged.
The minister said the government had done whatever was possible to help Dr Siddiqui during her trial in New York, promised to take up the matter politically with US authorities but added: “We will not take any action without the consent of her family.”
After announcement of support for the protest by PPP chief whip and Minister for Labour and Manpower Khurshid Ahmed Shah and PML-Q chief whip Riaz Hussain Pirzada and an agreement of parliamentary groups to hold the debate on Wednesday, Speaker Fehmida Mirza adjourned the house early in the evening until 10am on Tuesday, so the members could march outside the Parliament House where some group leaders spoke out their anger into television cameras. Some members later marched up to the nearby Supreme Court building.

My opinion about MQM is well known to everyone and I never left any chance to criticize on their actions. Allah knows that what Altaf Husain and his party has in their hearts and Pakistani politicians are not worth predicted at this stage.
However I welcome his voice against injustice to Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. The protest he organised was not less than one million at Karachi and at least at 40 different cities a combined protest with other parties was arranged.
We pray to Allah that what he said today, he may stuck to his policy. In fact we have no power and if Allah may change hearts of such political leaders than current policies of corrupt troika like Zardari, Gaillani and Kiyani mafia could change their policies.
Please note that his statemnt is not as simple as others are thinking, please read text of his statement. It is very difficult for US to digest his statement and also difficult for him to again summersault on the issue.
Be optimistic and wait and see. Any issue can change heart and minds of our political elite. Today's NATO and ISAF attack and killings of Pakistani citizens has forced many US apologists on back feet. KARACHI: MQM chief Altaf Hussain Altaf has demanded of the US government and President Barack Obama to declare the conviction of Dr Aafia Siddiqui null and void and send her back to Pakistan.
He said this during a telephonic address from London at a huge rally held here on Tuesday against the conviction of Dr Aafia Siddiqui on MA Jinnah Road. The rally, which demanded the release of Siddiqui, started from the mausoleum of Quaid-i-Azam and ended at the Tibet Centre. Various rallies converged there from different parts of the city.
He said 90 per cent people around the globe were against the policies of the United States, urging the Muslim countries to get united and raise their voices wherever Muslims were being suppressed. “Altaf Hussain is facing several allegations. There is no allegation, which has not been levelled against me. I never care for any allegation,” he added.
Altaf condemned the conviction of Dr Aafia strongly and warned that it would not be in the best US interests if they want to gain sympathies. He also said if these policies were not reviewed, it would result in severe hatred against the US government and its citizens all over the world.
He claimed that the allegations against Dr Aafia were fake and fictitious and the court had no proof of the charges made against her. The actual charges against Dr Aafia are still to be known, he added.
He said the allegations against Dr Aafia were similar to the Iraq attack where fake accusations of the production of weapons of mass destruction paved the way to a million innocent civilian deaths. He said similarly, Dr Aafia Siddiqui was convicted for 86 years without any charges.
He also demanded of Zardari and Gilani to use all diplomatic channels for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui as early as possible. He said he hoped that the whole Pakistani nation would see their daughter in Pakistan very soon.
Dr Aafia may not be physically powerful enough to attack an American soldier but she is mentally powerful, he stressed. Altaf asked the United Nations and the European countries to use all their good offices for the release of Dr Aafia.
He said if the US wanted the whole world to be a peaceful place, then the Americans need to respect other’s religion and adopt a live-and-let-live policy. The MQM chief said he was not afraid of accusing the US despite it being a super power, because he was not scared of anyone. “I respect only the Holy Quran and Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), and believe the only super power is Allah,” he said.
He said a nation can be pressed once but finally they emerge and raise their voices against such human rights violation. He added that if the MQM came into power it would make Pakistan an independent country.
He appealed to all Islamic countries to rise and help not to tarnish the image of Islam and use their all diplomatic channels for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui. Punishment of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Muslim daughter, is a slap on whole Islamic world, he added.
He also urged all developed countries to rise against this human rights violation, which is the biggest in the history of the world. He also appealed to all the human rights organisations of the United States to raise their voices against this conviction.
Referring to the demonstration held at 60 places in Pakistan at a time under the auspices of MQM, he said that millions of people are demanding the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui. He asked that religion of each and every one should be respected.
Dr Afia Siddiqui’s sister Dr Fauzia Siddiqui and deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar also spoke on the occasion. Through a unanimous resolution, Sattar strongly demanded that the conviction of Dr Aafia Siddiqui be declared null and void.
He said the MQM would continuously raise its voice against the conviction till the release of Dr Aafia.
He claimed over one million people had participated in the rally. Dr Fauzia Siddiqui expressed her gratitude for extending all-out support for the release of her sister.
She said: “This mammoth rally proves that the whole nation demands that her sister be released”. She also thanked MQM chief Altaf Hussain for extending all-out support for the release of her sister. In another resolution, the rally demanded that killers of Dr Imran Farooq be arrested as early as possible. |

Her Lawyers had no choice left but to get her released on Insanity Plea because they could not defend her against the Evidence provided by the state.
* They had gotten her to examined by independent Psychiatrists to prove their case, when in her first appearance in the court she had not remained silent as she was advised. She had started screaming against USA, plead guilty to the charges and had demanded Death Sentence.
* She failed her Lawyers by acting normal in front of Psychiatrists however, during the court proceedings, she kept screaming and was taken out of court a few times to continue proceedings because of her loud interfering outbursts.
* Her Lawyers could not ask USA, where were her other 2 children her supporters call missing because when she was arrested by Afghan Police in Ghazni, she only had one with her. He was never handed over to USA and was handed over to Pakistan Authorities.
* She herself did not accuse USA or Pakistan of killing or stealing her other 2 children.
* The Statements of her Supporters that she was abducted by Pakistan and handed over to USA have been proven wrong because she had left her sister to marry an Al Qaeda operative, who was a Nephew of 9/11 Al Qaeda Mastermind, Khalid Shaikh Mohammad. Khalid, in a US Jail, told FBI about this incident without any pressure.
* Its a lie that she was in Bagram Prison for years because her own Uncle, who lives in Islamabad had told Reporters that she had come to his house in a Car and had asked him to arrange for her travel to Afghanistan before she was caught in Ghazni.
* Allegation that USA has made her confess is also false because she says, she was never tortured in USA Custody. She had been weak because of Bullet wound and then because she had gone on Hunger Strikes again and again to make her look they way she looks so frail right now, not because she has been beaten up in Jail. Her Lawyers also never accused US of any mistreatment.
* US Government says, after she was shot back by a US Interrogating Team Member defending himself and others from her and was subdued, her life was saved because she was rushed very fast to a Military Hospital for her Stomach Wound. She was not thankful to them for saving her life because she had said that she had wanted to die as an Islamic JehaaDi Martyr.
* Learning about her Mental State, one can say its possible that either she killed her other 2 children because of her neglect or she may have used them as Suicide Bombers in Pakistan or Afghanistan in her crazy JehaaD.
* According to her first former Husband, she was making very good money in her job as Neuro-scientist in USA but donating her income to Al Qaeda.
* Investigation also proved that she was collecting money from Moslims in USA for JehaaD against USA and had a Bank Account in name of her Charitable Organization.

KARACHI: MQM Chief Altaf Hussain has demanded explanation from US government over conviction of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, Geo News reported Tuesday.
The MQM Chief was addressing via telephone from London the participants of rallies taken out against conviction of Dr. Aafia Siddiqi by a US court.
He said the nation is unaware of the charges under which Dr. Afia has been sentenced 86-year imprisonment.
He said that Dr Aafia has become a symbol of pride for the nation. Altaf urged US to provide evidence that she fired at US soldiers in Afghanistan during investigation and injured them.
MQM chief said that Dr Aafia showed great courage during her trial. He pointed out that US deserves punishment for killing innocent people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He also criticized US over drone attacks saying these were killing many Pakistani civilians. 'Ninety percent of Pakistanis are against American policies and the West needs to reorganize its strategies.'
He said only superpower is Allah Almighty and the World can not be converted into a haven of peace through use of force but it can be done with the help of love. No one likes terrorism and we too opposes it, he said.
Altaf said he respects all religions and expects the same from followers of other religions.

DID JUDGE BERMAN MAKE A MISTAKE - WILL US ATTORNEY GENERAL CALL FOR A MIS-TRIAL?
Dear Mr Holder,
I am a journalist and film-maker who has been investigating the rather intriguing case of Dr Aafia Siddiqui since her disappearance with her three children in 2003.
Can you please tell me why a Pakistani citizen, who allegedly carried out a crime in Afghanistan, was charged, tried and sentenced in a US court?
Not only did the alleged crime happen in another country, but Ms Siddiqui was renditioned without formal extradition papers and without correct consular access according to official US records.
No other citizen, from anywhere else in the world, has ever been put on trial in a US criminal court for the attempted murder of US soldiers although quite clearly, from the horrific statistics coming out of Iraq and Afghanistan the death toll and injuries of US soldiers is now running in excess of tens of thousands.
Can we assume from this that the US is now in full occupation, and therefore in control of sovereignty of Afghanistan or did Judge Richard Berman simply make a mistake by accepting such a case in to his court?
I have copied in Lord Nazir Ahmed from the British House of Lords in to this email since he has taken a particularly close interest in the whole case.
