Media freedom and Attack on WikiLeaks Assange

- Dr. Abdul Ruff

------------------

Unless they pursue the pro-regime or pro-imperialist or pro-colonialist policies in aid of the forces that work against humanity, the media are expected only to just report what is supplied to them by the corporate controlled media.  Any investigative efforts by media to bring out truth and facts are resisted and opposed by them if t such investigations go against them.  Precisely for this reason that WikiLeaks Assange and the like are on attack by the western corporate media and their regime bosses.

US might still calls itself a democracy- so are UK and India and Israel.  At best USA could be a funny democracy or terrocracy. The same is true of other terrocracies. Their corporate media ably shield all their secret terror dealings as the key media policy.  The prosecution of Assange would not only destroy WikiLeaks as the strongest mouthpiece of human of human rights and abuse of them in terrocracies, but the very human voice of protest. CIA as the official intelligence authority is capable of mischief. The use of the Monica Lewinsky scandal by the Republican Party and its media backers in the rightwing conspiracy to drive President Bill Clinton from office remains the finest example of CIA extra constitutional abuse of power. .

That in an occupied nation human life of the locals is the cheapest thing and anything can happen anytime and ultimate casualty would be common people has been enliven in Pakistan with murder of Muslims has been a routine matter and western media expect more and more genocides of Muslims at the earliest before the occupying NATO terror syndicates led by USA-UK terror twins quit the Islamic nation eventually. Journalists' community in the provincial capital on Friday took out a protest rally against the brutal killing of Wali Khan Babar, reporter of a private TV channel. Scores of journalists gathered outside press club to condemn the vicious killing of Wali who was killed last week while discharging his professional duty in Karachi. They demanded of the government to immediately constitute a judicial commission for investigating the tragic incident.

Although they consider the invader America as their protector and sustainer and still refuse to recognize or condemn the harm the occupying NATO terrorists have caused to this Islamic state converting it into a non-Islamic, rather anti-Islamic country, the Pakistani journalists say the role of security agencies remains vague in the backdrop of prevailing unrest in Karachi. As many as 28 journalists embraced martyrdom so far while performing their professional obligation during last few years. Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist (PFUJ), main representative body of the journalists' community, also strongly denounced the incident against which protest rallies and demonstrations were held across the country including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They viewed that the killing of Wali Khan Babar was not the first incident of its kind as there were a large numbers of journalists targeted by miscreants in different parts especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during last few years.

International community might think that the attacks on individuals are of no concern of them when terror attacks on Islamic nations are tolerated and promoted by them deliberately for special reasons. World is now under the terror grip of GST forces and both weak nations and individuals are at risk.

The attack on Assange is an attack on core democratic rights. The latest WikiLeaks cables are helping to expose the daily intrigues of US imperialism and its allies. Among the long list of revelations, the documents have exposed US collaboration with the German and Spanish governments to quash investigations into torture; the contempt of the State Department for international law and human rights; and secret discussions over the possibility of war with China and Russia.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange remains under virtual house arrest, even after he was illegally detained in a London prison, initially denied bail and held in isolation for nine days. The vendetta against Assange is a political provocation that has all the characteristics of a dirty tricks operation. The exploitation of false charges of sexual and personal misconduct as a cover for a political attack is a well-known modus operandi. If Assange remained silent, it would likely be portrayed by the real guilties as a virtual admission of uncommitted guilt.

The western terrocracies are cooking up stories to target him. Over the past several months, has been the target of a state-orchestrated campaign based on trumped-up allegations of sexual misconduct. He was named in an international arrest warrant. Assange’s lawyers are fighting extradition to Sweden. The extradition of Assange to Sweden could be followed by his extradition to the US where he would under the torture zone of CIA.  There are reports of discussions between the American and Swedish governments, and a grand jury has purportedly been convened in Virginia to charge Assange with violations of the US Espionage Act. Government officials and politicians have branded Assange a “terrorist.” Some have called for his assassination.

Julian Assange must be vigorously defended. Obviously, one purpose of the sex charges is to divert attention from the revelations contained in the WikiLeaks documents, while involving Assange himself in an extremely costly and exhausting legal battle. US Vice President Joseph Biden, a top US-NATO criminal, took the very calculated step of calling Assange a “high tech terrorist.” US gimmicks represent an enormous assertion of state power against free speech, the freedom of the Internet, and democratic rights as a whole.

West might still talk bull about democracy when they make the very existence of individuals and weak nations insignificant and insecure. Generally the western and eastern terrocracies, the so-called democracies, despise even constructive criticism or expose of their secret terror deals. US President Obama who is also the leader of Party of democrats also declined to support WikiLeaks Assange. There lies the crux of existence of terrocracies, sharing same terror values.

However, truthfulness should be the governing  approach of investigative or any other journalism and WikiLeaks Assange has upheld that principle.
