A Free Kashmir: Random Thoughts-50
After Poll: Indian Threat in Kashmir The final stage of voting, scheduled for December 24, is also over and results are pouring in. Every where in Kashmir there are military forces, perhaps even outnumbering the civilians. Curfews, both undeclared and declared; both short-term and indefinite imposed now and then have caused immense problems for Kashmiris, just as the Israeli blockages and genocides in Palestine and genocides, to thwart the freedom movement and people didn't know what to do now. As the agitation was at its peak, attention of the freedom leaders was diverted and they cold not intensify the struggle. After cunningly annexing Jammu Kashmir and heavily militarizing it, India hatched strategies invade and infiltrate into all possible organizations in India, Kashmir and around. Indian agents are infesting in every organization in Jammu Kashmir and possibly in freedom organizations too blocking their activities to gain freedom from India back. The Indian agents are operating in full wing to ensure the "victory" of the "Indian" poll in JK. As usual, the political leaders pursuing boycott call were jailed or put under house arrest, undeclared curfew, thwarting peaceful marches and the armed siege of Kashmir has eroded the credibility of the voting percentage. Many leaders, arrested during the polls in JK, have been released and rearrested and again released. Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani, however, continued to remain under house arrest since November 25.Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest four days ahead of the first phase of assembly elections to stop all possible ways that could make Jahaan Chunav Wahaan Chalo call of Coordination Committee on polling days. Both India and its media are engaged in double-speak on every aspect. They use the term "separatists" to make Hindus denounce the freedom urge of Kashmiris who demand their own nation back. Bulk of media in India and Kashmir are shamelessly anti-freedom and mock the freedom fighters as "separatists". Look at the way India and its media behaves. While India does not consider the fight of Indian settlers in Sri Lanka for a separate country as separatists, they are known in India as patriots; whereas the Kashmiris who struggle to liberate their Kashmir nation from occupying terror India are unwittingly called "separatists". India has like wise instructed the pro-India political elements and media to call the freedom fighters of Kashmir as "separatists". And both pro-India elements and media faithfully name the freedom fighters as separatists, so much so even some the freedom fighters call themselves separatists. That is Indian strategy. Even freedom fighters are psychologically coerced to call themselves as separatists, if not terrorists. India media have once again trumpeted with the news that Kashmiris braved the poll boycott of "separatists" and supported Indian rule in Kashmir by participating in the poll. The Multi-phase voting in Kashmir ended on 24 Dec as India wanted with cooperation from all concerned at least indirectly from freedom movement leaders. It was 'curtains down' for the polls to the State legislature in Kashmir, bringing to an end the crucial final phase of elections in the region. Amid tight security and mild anti poll protests, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed the conclusion of seventh and the final phase of 2008 Assembly Elections. But the fact remains the Kashmiris would have to continue to face the deadly military and police arrogance with a fake democracy certificate and Kashmir will continue to bear the Indian brunt and hence the freedom leaders have to be watchful of the tactics of Indo-pro-India outfits operating as anti-Kashmir lobbies in Kashmir.
In the seventh & final phase of Assembly polls, over 56 per cent voting was recorded. In the first four phases, the number of candidates showed a marked increase this time as compared to 2002. Tough security restrictions to facilitate the last phase of elections for eight seats of Srinagar saw people cursing themselves for having chosen the city as their abode. "As if it was a punishment for being in the capital city," said an anguished resident, Abdul Hameed who had decided to vote but did not after the City was put under virtual siege forty-eight hours before the polling began Tuesday morning. There were no frenzied voters and long queues that were earlier seen in Bandipora, Ganderbal, Baramulla, Kupwara, Budgam, Islamabad, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian. Unlike previous occasions, the media men had to locate the voters to have their bytes. Towards the finale, enthusiasm of voters came down considerably. The poll turnout euphoria that was witnessed during the earlier six phases of polling in Kashmir disappeared as Srinagar maintained its record of lowest poll percentage. Srinagar witnessed large scale anti-election protests and police and paramilitary, who were deployed in strength across the city, faced tough time in quelling the demonstrations. In the Kashmir division the number has gone up to more than double. The polls also witnessed scattered clashes, fake voting, and poor turnout in many parts of Srinagar, where 152 candidates were in the fray from eight constituencies. In Batamaloo constituency, voting was quite poor as residents stayed away from the poll process.
People also staged anti-election and anti-India demonstration at several places and clashed with CRPF and policemen. Though voters turned out in hordes in Magarmal Bagh, in the Lachmanpora and Sidiqabad, out of 891 votes in polling booth 99 B, no vote was cast till 11:30 am. In Amira Kadal constituency, the boycott call of separatists was effective and the turnout remained quite low than expected. The areas like Rawalpora, Natipora and Mehjoor Nagar saw moderate polling while Barzulla, Rambagh, Aloocha Bagh and Solina witnessed poor turnout. Only 70 votes were cast in four polling booths at Barzulla till 1 pm. However, short queues were seen at some polling booths in Mehjoor Nagar, where around 50 percent voters exercised their franchise. In Habba Kadal constituency, a very thin polling was recorded. Some voted for jobs and some against politicians involved in infamous sex scandal. Thin voting was recorded in Khanyar, where from senior NC leader Ali Mohammad Sagar is seeking re-election. After Srinagar witnessed 20 per cent voting in the last phase of elections, Governor N N Vohra, complimented the people for reiterating their faith in democracy, despite many constraints and described the high voter turnout in the just concluded 7-phase assembly elections as a clear victory of the large majority who wish the restoration of peace and normalcy. "Democracy has triumphed yet again", the Governor said while complimenting the people for exercising their franchise, despite inclement weather and varied threats. He observed that the people had evinced their clear unwillingness to be taken for granted or exploited and pushed around in the name of region or religion. The Governor complimented the State Administration, the Police and the Central Police Forces for their sustained devotion to creating a peaceful environment for the successful conduct of free and fair polls. In a way, India is rather pleased with Kashmiri voters more with Jammuites. Addressing a news conference here, B R Sharma, Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu Kashmir expressed satisfaction at the peaceful conclusion of the polls. Elections have gone completely peacefully. The biggest satisfaction is that the turnout of the voters has been unprecedented," he added, people have to be given full credit, but the freedom leaders need to be credited with the positive development in poll scenario with their soft attitude to polls. 43 parties including 7 National, 3 State, 9 registered unrecognized and 24 other parties participated in these elections. Even as polling was being held for the seventh and the final phase of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, life remained crippled in Srinagar for the second consecutive day today due to a general strike and restrictions; Nevertheless, the restrictions on movement in the areas falling within the eight Assembly segments spread over Srinagar district were not as severe as compared to previous six phases when people remained confined to their homes because of the imposition of undeclared curfew. India has ensured the vote of Hindus in Jammu region, in Jammu district the overall poll percentage was 69 per cent Srinagar district recorded 21 per cent voter turnout "“ the lowest in the entire State during the seven-phase assembly elections which concluded on 24 Dec. The Chief Electoral Officer said that the voter turnout during 2002 elections in Srinagar was 5.06 per cent and all the eight constituencies had registered single digit voter turnout. Sharma said as against voter turnout of 43 per cent in the 2002 Assembly elections, the overall poll percentage in 87 constituencies of 2008 elections was around 62 per cent. He said 26,56,627 voters had exercised their franchise in 2002 while 38,89,750 electors voted in 2008 Assembly elections. Terming the elections as one of the most peaceful in the State, the CEO said that as against 114 incidents during 2002 elections only 21 such incidents took place this time. In 2002 elections, as many as 63 persons lost their lives, 84 were injured while in 2008 elections only five lost their lives and seven received injuries. 29 troopers were killed in 2002 and 26 injured while only one trooper was killed and three injured during 2008 assembly elections. At least 33 persons including two photo-journalists, a cameraman and two policemen were injured in clashes between anti-election protestors and cops at many places in Srinagar. More than 30,000 CRPF, BSF and police personnel were deployed on the streets to ensure smooth conduct of polls and prevent people from staging anti-election demonstrations. Security forces also used force and lobbed teargas shells at Natipora locality of uptown city where a group of youth tried to take out a march. Five persons, including two policemen, were injured in the clashes, sources said. Reports from Nowhatta and Lal Bazar areas of the city indicate that the forces deployed in these areas had to use force to disperse the anti-poll protestors. Scores of people took to the streets at Eidgah, SR Gunj, Mallaratta and Khaiwan Malpora and tried to stage anti-poll protests. However, CRPF and police personnel deployed in strength in the areas used force to quell the protesters and chased them away. In Chanapora area of the Srinagar city, hundreds of people took to streets shouting pro-freedom slogans. CRPF personnel fired bullets in the air to disperse voters who clashed among themselves in Kani Katch area in the interiors of Dal Lake in Hazratbal assembly constituency. The clash broke out between the voters inside polling booth 72-Hazratbal in Kani Katch after the Congress supporters objected to the polling booth being based inside the residence of Ghulam Muhammad Tanga, the local councilor of National Conference (NC). They alleged that Tanga was trying to persuade the voters to cast votes in favour of NC inside the polling booth and when they objected to this he slapped some of them. Of course, India did what feared it would not. Indian imposed poll in Jammu Kashmir under Indian military occupation since 1947 underwent polls almost peacefully in JK standards. The boycott call of freedom leaders, which was less effective during first six phases, was totally effective in the final phase on 24 Dec, as most of the people stayed away from poll process and preferred to stay indoors. In the first phase, on Dec 13 around 30 percent voting was recorded till afternoon in south Kashmir, while in Jammu region it was over 40 percent, touching 60 in Bani constituency, as the fifth phase of assembly elections was underway in Jammu and Kashmir Saturday. The anti-election protests and clashes were reported in several parts of Srinagar during which cops fired dozens of tear smoke shells and resorted to heavy cane charge to disperse the agitating people. Meanwhile, there were allegations that bogus voters had cast votes in some polling booths in Bemina, Soura, Lal Bazar, Allochi Bagh and upper city. In Kawdara, residents claimed that police arrested ten bogus voters, who came in vehicles and tried to sneak into a polling booth to cast votes. At many places, CRPF refused to entertain authority letters of Election Commission of India (ECI) and barred media persons from entering the polling stations. Now the world is obviously disinterested in Indian bluffs. For India poll in Kashmir was a prestige issue. Facing a credibility crisis, India did every possible hat-trick to get the poll done. Media offices were ransacked. Chairmen of both the Hurriyat factions and near about a hundred other separatist leaders continued to remain under house arrest today. As per sources, it was a precautionary measure to prevent them from leading anti-poll demonstrations and join the 'Lal Chowk Chalo' march. While the freedom groups called for boycott, the Indian machinery, supported by pro-India outfits longing for fortunes in power, pushed for the poll at any cost. Pertinent to mention, the Coordination Committee (CC), had asked people to join the 'Lal Chowk Chalo' march today while the government has issued an advertisement requesting people to follow what they had christened as the 'Polling Station Chalo'. The chairmen of Hurriyat factions, Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq rejected the election by stating that they have lost relevance as the process was being conducted under the presence of lakhs of Indian soldiers. "It is unfortunate that the State administration is pretending to be unaware of the importance of Friday congregational prayers for Muslims. Imposing undeclared curfews and laying siege around Jamia Masjid has exposed anti-Muslim policy of Indian government," Mirwaiz said. The percentage of polling shown by Government of India doesn't hold any importance. "Let them show 100 per cent poll participation but people ofKashmir will still demand freedom," said Mirwaiz, raising freedom slogans, answered by thousands inside the Masjid. Chairman of Peoples Conference (PC) Sajjad Gani Lone termed the recent polls "held under the shadow of Indian gun" as a "setback to resistance leaders" but said it was not their defeat.. There should be a total ban on calling strikes. If the mindless strike calls continue, then traders and people should come forward and defy these. Stone pelting is another shame and we really don't know who is pelting stones at whom. We need to build institutions of resistance." Lone criticized the leaders and intellectuals who argue that people in Kashmir were unpredictable and said Kashmiris have rendered exemplary sacrifices and followed the programs of resistance leadership for the past 20 years. He said election turnout figures need to be evaluated in the context of an uneven playfield. Democracy is a holistic concept not a partial one, Freedom leader Lone said people voted for their day-to-day problems and "India should not see it as mandate in its favour". He called upon pro-freedom leadership to abandon, what he termed, an old method of "coasting, drifting or just reacting". Notwithstanding the continued Indian atrocities and back-stabbing from pro-Indian leaders, Kashmiris have been struggling to achieve complete independence from Indian precisely because Kashmir is not an internal matter of the occupiers, Indian bogus assertion about it being a part of India. Hindus could ask the British leaders if India is also a part of UK or USA just because they occupy or control Indian affairs and policies and even intelligence now. Illegal occupation does not give India permanent authority over Jammu Kashmir. Resistance to Indian terror occupation should continue if Kashmiris seek sovereignty back form arrogant India and kick out the terror forces from the lands of Kashmiris.
As it stands, Jammu Kashmir is heading towards hung assembly with NC and PDP taking more seats, while Congress and BJP trying to place themselves as protector of Hindu interests in Kashmir. Notwithstanding the nail-biting suspense around the final outcome of the elections, former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Mufti Muhammad Syed and Ghulam Nabi Azad have had their fresh business suits ready for oath taking, understandably with the hope that they are slated to head the new government. NC leader & CM hopeful Farooq Abdullah won in one constituency while lost in another.
End of another Indian poll in Jammu Kashmir under military build-up is over and the results would be out soon and also a new India backed regime in Srinagar. Congress, an organization catering to majority interest and merely paying lip service to minority cannot be trusted by Muslims. As early trends indicated a hung assembly in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajya Sabha MP & senior Congress leader former Governor of JK, & son of former king who ruled Jammu Kashmir and ditched the Kashmiris by handing over Kashmir to India on some favors, Karan Singh today favored an alliance between the Congress and the National Conference arguing that the two parties were "ideologically more compatible". This can only be expected from him who wants the illegal Amarnath illegal deal done once again.
True, the freedom leaders have let the world know that they are too keen to get back independence in a peaceful manner. Hence they indirectly cooperated with Indian agencies, unlike the in 2002. However, India would take it to its own advantage. Freedom leaders should now sit back and consider if they should come together and make single freedom struggle group, even with a new name of the forum to clearly identify their goals and guidelines for future course of action. Now that the India has successfully done the poll in JK, it is expected that it would immediately release of all detained Hurriyat leaders and activists would follow soon. Every resistance movement across the world had seen highs and lows and "all great victories were born in learning the lesson from the setbacks. The pro-India outfits in a future JK government would try to appease New Delhi and its Hindus by reopening the illegal land deal in favor of Amaranthji, an NRI Hindu god. Here the India will relearn the lesions all over again. Freedom leaders have to play more creative role henceforth towards achieving their goal of re-independence.
