APL mourns the death of Lord Bingham of Cornhill

APL (Association of Pakistani Lawyers), a team of Pakistani origin lawyers, Solicitors, Barristers, and Judges in UK held a special condolences session at the death of former Lord Chief justice and Master of the Rolls, Lord Bingham of Cornhill and paid tribute to Lord Bingham in the highest manner.

Lord Bingham died of cancer at his family home in Wales on Saturday 11 Sept, aged 76, having continued tirelessly lecturing and writing since his retirement two years ago. Lord Bingham, born in London to an Ulster Irish father, originally studied history, but went on to hold the top law offices, succeeding Lord Donaldson as master of the rolls from 1992 to 1996, and becoming lord chief justice of England and Wales from 1996 to 2000 and senior law lord until 2008. As senior law lord he ruled that detention of foreign terror suspects without charge breached their human rights, and after retiring in 2008 he argued that Britain's invasion of Iraq in 2003 broke international law. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 2005, the first judge to be so honoured.

APL termed him as an advocate of modern human rights in Britain who gave a new meaning to habeas corpus post 9/11 and 7/7 and ignited a fruitful debate hindering executive’s arbitrary unchecked actions with positive purposeful judgements at the top of higher judiciary in the most difficult of times. APL remembered him as a judge who not only protected the integrity of the judiciary but promoted human rights, rule of law and  justice which is seen to be done at a time when it seemed a difficult task, and left a brave legacy for his successors in office.

APL Chair Amjad Malik who received young human rights lawyer 2000 award from Lord Bingham on 6 Dec 2000 at law Society Hall remembered him in good words and declared him a champion of human rights and voice of minority and said that as long as people in modern day world fight unlawful detention, torture slavery, and seek protection for free speech, fair trials, privacy and liberty, Lord Bingham will continue to shine as a beacon of light and a guiding principle.

APL paid homage to Lord Bingham and condolences to those who are left behind reminding them of what a fine man he was who left a glittering legacy.
