July 18: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is seriously thinking of sacking the PPP-led government by mid-August, official sources said.
"The President is not happy with the government and is seriously thinking to wrap up the PPP-led set-up," a senior official at the Presidency told this newspaper. The close aide of the President said, "He is seriously thinking to take a final step in mid-August as he is concerned over the prevailing political and economic situation of the country and is not satisfied with the performance of the government." President Musharraf on various occasions has expressed disappointment over the performance of the government, saying that it has miserably failed to tackle the situation and has rather engaged itself in non-serious activities.
"President Musharraf is of the view that the government, despite tall claims of serving the masses, has miserably failed to improve law and order and the terrorists have gained more confidence due to the government's wrong policies toward curbing terror activities," he said.
"The situation is so serious that Pakistan has been openly held responsible by the Karzai government and India for the attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul," he added. "The Inter-Services Intelligence has been alleged for involvement in acts of violence in Afghanistan," he said, referring to President Musharraf's views.
The Afghan government has also declined to engage in dialogue with Pakistan till they get assurance from Pakistan that they would not interfere in Afghan affairs, the official said.
The US President has expressed concern over the movement of extremist elements inside Pakistani tribal areas and their engagement in violence, added the official.
"President Musharraf is also disappointed over the failure of the government on economic front. The Pakistan economy has suffered a set back as the value of the Pakistani rupee fell sharply and the foreign exchange reserves reduced significantly during the last three months," said the official. "The government has also not been able to control the rising prices of essential commodities, especially eatables," he added.
