Note on Communal Attitude in Kashmir

Jammu Kashmir, now placed under president's rule, after a turmoil following the debacle of JK state-sponsored illegal Amarnath land deal, is gradually becoming "normal".  But the Indian media, as before, have made deliberate distortions on the happenings in Jammu Kashmir blaming Kashmiri Muslims, as usual, for the "emergency" situation in the state. Some clarification is required for the sake of clearing the doubts in the minds of the world journalists focusing on anti-Islamism, on the issue.

Kashmiri Muslims have always been quite considerate to Hindu pilgrimage in Kashmir, but the government has taken that secular spirit of Kashmirs as their inherent weakness. When the entire Kashmir witnessed unprecedented massive demonstrations against the questionable and legally imperfect order, it was only Hindu pilgrim vehicles those were visible on Kashmir roads while as all other civilian vehicles were disallowed by the protesting crowds. Right now the public opinion is overwhelmingly in favor of protection of land, people and the identity of both. But can the leaders sustain the momentum? Although the agitation was popular and spontaneous, the fact remains that it was anchored by the freedom fighters. But this fact should not blind them to the ground realities.

Whether or not what the Kashmiris have been dong in the form of good gestures for Hindus is right could a subject for in-depth debate in Islamic circles. But the Hindus have taken the help they receive from Kashmiri Muslims as their legitimate right. As usual, the Hindu militant organizations, for political mileage needed for the forthcoming parliamentary poll, have tried to use the issue to arouse Hindutva passion and sought intervention of the Indian Supreme Court, which they consider as their own institution, but the apex court refused to interfere with the Jammu and Kashmir Government's decision to revoke the transfer of land to Amarnath Shrine Board. "a court cannot revoke a cabinet decision," a Bench said. One has to see what the Supreme Court would do in the case of Grand Babri Mosque.

The anti-Muslim and anti-Kashmiri forces need to understand that by faith Muslims are ordained to be tolerant and Kashmiri Muslims have time and again demonstrated their tolerance even in the wake of grave provocations. But their limits of tolerance cannot be stretched beyond a point. It is high time for the well-meaning people of Jammu to put their heads together and prevent the situation from going out of their hands. What is needed is to sustain this and prevent it from appearing as communal as some people with sinister designs are hell bent to project it like that.

The land deal and the anti-Kashmiri and anti-Islamic activities by Hindu radical outfits have taught the Kashmiris another lesson on their freedom struggle. politically aware of the goal of their long struggle, meaning of the martyrdom of thousands of innocent Kashmiris over several decades and what has been happening behind the scene in gubernatorial and CM offices playing hide and seek games, according to the sings relayed from New Delhi, fooling the people of Jammu Kashmir. Kashmiris have become politically matured now to see through the game of Indian bosses.

Let JK government put an end to the sheer madness witnessed on Jammu roads. These acts of vandalism and targeting the hapless people from the Muslim minority community are apt to sow seeds of disaffection among the communities and complicate the problems for India. The state government too is expected to do its duty and let it not be seen as collaborating with the communal elements to advance the Indian cause in Jammu Kashmir.

 A Word

Kashmiris resist and reject the anti-Kashmiri tactics and Hinduization politics of New Delhi. India should stop strenuous efforts to Hinduize Kashmir and it is in the best interests of both Kashmirs and Indian Hindus keep Kashmir without dislocating it cultural and religious ethos by engineering Hindutva moorings there. More importantly, Indian and JK government under governor's rule should consider, on an urgent basis, the legitimate aspirations of freedom seeking Kashmiris and act accordingly- stop arresting, harassing, arresting and jailing without legal sanction, and killing the Kashmiris. Patriotic struggle for full and complete freedom and independence from India.
