Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was deported Monday hours after he had landed in Pakistan from seven years in exile hoping to campaign against the country's U.S.-allied military ruler, officials said.

About four hours after he arrived on a flight from London, Sharif was taken into custody and charged with corruption, but then quickly spirited to another plane and flown out of Pakistan toward Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, an intelligence official said.

An official in President Gen. Musharraf's office confirmed Sharif was deported but did not divulge his destination. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to media. There was no immediate formal confirmation from the government.

Pakistan's Dawn News TV and ARY TV networks also reported that Sharif's destination was Jeddah.

Sharif's deportation came despite a landmark Supreme Court ruling last month that the two-time former premier, whose elected government was ousted by Musharraf in a 1999 coup, had the right to return to Pakistan and that authorities should not obstruct him.

"It is a violation of the constitution, and it is a violation of the court order under which Nawaz Sharif was allowed to arrive and stay in Pakistan," Sadique ul-Farooq, a close aide to Sharif told The Associated Press.

As Sharif's supporters battled police blocking roads leading to Islamabad airport, black-uniformed commandos entered the Pakistan International Airlines jetliner soon after it landed and surrounded Sharif, an Associated Press reporter on board said.

Sharif later disembarked with several of his supporters and government security personnel and entered the airport building.

While the move apparently sidelines a powerful political enemy of the general, it is likely to deepen Musharraf's growing unpopularity and reinforce public perceptions that he is an authoritarian ruler ahead of presidential and legislative elections.

In recent days, Sharif's party says up to 2,000 of his supporters have been rounded up "” although security officials put the number at around 700.

Overnight, police put at least four prominent opposition politicians under house arrest, and on Monday blocked all roads into the airport using trucks, tractors and barbed wire. The show of strength appeared to curb what Sharif's party had predicted would be a massive welcome for the former premier.

But police still clashed with the hundreds of Sharif supporters who did turn out.

They fired tear gas and supporter threw rocks in at least two separate locations near Islamabad and also a bridge on main highway leading to the capital from Pakistan's northwest frontier. Several people were injured at each clash, AP reporters said.

"We wanted to get to the airport to welcome the person who has challenged the dictator," said Asif Ali, one of the Sharif supporters near Islamabad. "We were tear-gassed and baton-charged."

Former President Rafiq Tarar, a Sharif loyalist, said he was roughed up in one confrontation. He declared the government was "anti-Pakistan." Witnesses said Tarar was later arrested.

Shortly before leaving London, Sharif asked his brother Shahbaz Sharif to remain in Britain to lead the party in case something happened to him in Pakistan.

He said he expected Musharraf to invoke emergency powers to stop his supporters in Pakistan "” but that this only underscored the need for him to return and fight to restore full democracy and the power of the judiciary.

"We are not scared of anything "” prisons and jails we have gone through all that," Sharif said.

Musharraf, who has received billions of dollars in U.S. aid to help in the country's fight against al-Qaida, plans to seek a new five-year term in office by mid-October. He has seen his popularity shrink since his failed attempt to fire Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry earlier this year spurred calls for an end to military rule.

Another exiled former prime minister plotting a political comeback, Benazir Bhutto, has said she also plans to return to Pakistan. She is due to announce her return date on Sept. 14.

As it seems ,America is much pleased with B B G as compared to PML(Q), so they are out.... Almost.

I think the Americans are behind this, and they might have asked or rather ordered the Saudi'es to jump in also, so i think this is What America has decided for people of Pakistan for this election:

Musharraf + PPP + MQM + Lotas from PML(Q) = War on Islman Continues......

Replied by(Wajeeh) Replied on (11/Sep/2007)

it was a sad day in the history of Pakistan the way he was deported .... Govt. really played a game with him showing him the arrest warrent so that the press and party members of PML - N got seprated from him and  then forefully putting him in the plane to Jedda and to end the drama the helicopter and the plane were flew togather ...
This shows the courage of Gen.Musharraf that he was arrested and was to sent to jail but he was still afraid of him ..
Lets see if Supreme Court can do something as it is the last hope for the People of Pakistan to get rid of Gen.Musharraf

1-When Zia hanged bhutto, he was leader of millions, and those millions are still with him from that day.. but they couldn't stop his hanging.

2-People were with CJ as well, but due to force use by MQM, they couldn't come to the roads.

3-May be you will agree me for one point, according to you, Altaf bhai is leader of 98%, then why he is not coming to Paksitan, ofcourse due to fear of some one...

4-All Awaam of Karachi, according to you, is with MQM, then why operation held by Naseer-ullah-babur against MQM, forced Altaf and others to run..

5-why people of Iraq, if America is true, were against Saddam, couldn't forced him out of the power.

6-why people of America, which according to news papers, are against Bush admin, cant kick him out.

7-why many countries are under one dictator rule from years.

the matter of fact is, only a revolution, of the caliber of, Iranian Islamic revolution, can clean bold dictator.

so my brother yes, a dictator government, which dont have any etichal or moral values, which dont have any respect of law, can do any thing, and that is why is more powerful then Awaam in 99 times out of 100.

and only the 100th time, which is only a revolution, Awaam is powerful the dictator.

but for this we all needs to be united.
we cant get the Pakistan we all dreaming by fighting for every right and wrong reason

for hearing this sounds very good that awaam ki power sub say ziaadaa hoti hya, but in reality this is not always true

few examples i have given below.
and one more example, which you will understand.. All Awaam of Karachi, according to you, is with MQM, then why operation held by Naseer-ullah-babur against MQM, forced Altaf and others to run..

may be, if you will try to understand, instead of debate for the sake of debate, you will get the point.

the matter of fact is, only a revolution, of the caliber of, Iranian Islamic revolution, can clean bold dictator.

he was man handled, which i am saying, without any exaggeration, i saw this on TV.

secondly

W hen Zia hanged bhutto, he was leader of millions, and those millions are still with him from that day.. but they couldn't stop his hanging.

People were with CJ as well, but due to force use by MQM, they couldn't come to the roads.

and same thing happened today, govt sealed all Pakistan, arrested all leaders, put containers on all roads.

GT road was blocked for 12 long hours...

and even then you are asking, why people couldn't gather

Afreen hay afreen

aaj pehli dafa tumhaari aqul pur paray taalooon pur maataam kurnay ko dil chah rahaa hay.

if there were no supporters of Nawaz in Pakistan, then wy govt use so much machinery and arrests..

why they didn't let people come?

May be you will agree me for one point, according to you, Altaf bhai is leader of 98%, then why he is not coming to Paksitan, ofcourse due to fear of some one...

Ran away termed use for those, who are sitting outside without any reasn like altaf Hussain and Benazir.

this term could have been use for Nawaz prior then 10/9/2007.

but after 10/9/2007 it has been proved that he is outside the country due to Mush government.

one thing which has been proved is, West kay hath bohut lambay hein...

My prediction was 100% in the end, but none of us should feel happy on this. because with the deportation of Nawaz, it has been cleared once again, that Pakistan is not running by Pakistanis and Pakistani have no right what so ever. Still our decisions are making out side Pakistan and we are slave of west who are just following them
