The US Central Intelligence Agency paid Pakistan millions of dollars for handing over more than 350 suspected al-Qaeda terrorists to the United States, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has said, The Times reported.

The assertions come in the military ruler's upcoming memoir "In the Line of Fire", serialised in The Times.
Musharraf does not reveal how much Pakistan was paid for the 369 Al-Qaeda suspects he ordered should be handed over to the United States, the newspaper said, noting, however, that such payments are banned by the US government.
The newspaper does not, however, print or quote the excerpts which make the allegations.
In response a US Department of Justice official was quoted as saying: "We didn't know about this. It should not happen. These bounty payments are for private individuals who help to trace terrorists on the FBI's most wanted list, not foreign governments. "
The Pakistani's leader's claims come after he said last week that former deputy secretary of state Richard Armitage had threatened to bomb Pakistan if it did not back the United States in the so-called "war on terror" in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, described by Musharraf as "what has to be the most undiplomatic statement ever made".
"Our relationships with international leaders is not something we are prepared to talk about," a CIA official told The Times.
Musharraf also writes that he was so angered by American demands in the wake of the September 11 attacks, which he calls "ludicrous", that he "war-gamed the United States as an adversary."
"There would be a violent and angry reaction if we didn't support the United States," an excerpt from his book reads.
"The question was: if we do not join them, can we confront them and withstand the onslaught? The answer was no".
He said that two days after the attacks, the US Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlain brought to him a set of seven demands including "blanket overflight and landing rights" and "use of Pakistan's naval ports, air bases, and strategic locations on borders".
Musharraf said Pakistan gave no "blanket permission" for anything.
The military leader also says that he decided to make the revelations to counter claims that Pakistan had not done enough to combat Al-Qaeda in the war on terror.

Aziz Haniffa in Washington, DC | September 27, 2006

Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf has acknowledged that he has to revise
the contention in his book that the CIA paid prize money to the Government of
Pakistan for their cooperation in fighting the global war on terror against the
al Qaeda.

During an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, the network's anchor referred to
Musharraf's argument in The Line of Fire,? that 'those who habitually accuse us
of not going enough in the war on terror, should simply ask the CIA how much
prize money it has paid to the Government of Pakistan?'

Blitzer said the CIA had refused comment on this assertion, but former senior
intelligence officials had said no such prize money was paid and that the CIA
only give rewards to individuals who help bring high-value terrorists to
justice.

Musharraf tried to wriggle out of this corner by saying, "I don't know whether
this is to the Government of Pakistan 't think I wrote to the Government of
Pakistan."

But Blitzer nailed him, saying, it was right there on page 237 that the money
was 'paid to the government,' and offered Musharraf an out, asking "You want to
revise that?"

Caught off guard, an embarrassed Musharraf responded, "Yes. I think if it is
written Government of Pakistan, yes."

Musharaf himself is a confused General and his book further establishes this
fact. In fact, he wanted the bombshell of "Armitage threat" to explode, but it
burn out with the use. Again he alleged payments receied by his Govt.from CIA
and now he wants to retract and amend it to private citizens as beneficiaries!!
And he wants to be the hero of Kargil, claims it was planned well in advance
and Shariff was consulted and informed and again conradicts the same by saying
Indian massing of troops and crossing the line led tothe war!!
Has this book any value or reveals any unknown "truth-s" but for promotion of
Bush himself, who said "Buy it" in the Press Conference

What message he wants to convey. Is he malingning US or Pakistan. Is he
trying to prove that Pakistan is a source for providing information for
ground level level operation of CIA..This revelation ,if true, paints
Pakistan It harms Pakistan more than US.Even if true,it would have been
better to avoid it's disclosure while in office.

are you really willing to stand up for that sort of statement?

people say things in the heat of the moment but what I think is this:
there are "some guys" who want every racial ethnic and religious group in
the world at each others' throats
and more often than not - they are White Guys. -- men of old money who want
to sit back and watch the world collapse into race war.
