At least 30 soldiers have been killed in an explosion at an army camp in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province.

Scores died in the miltary attack on the madrasa (File)

A senior military spokesman in Peshawar, the province's capital, said earlier on Wednesday that a man had detonated a bomb killing himself and 10 to 15 soldiers, but later reports put the toll at 30.

Major-General Shaukat Sultan said: "It was a training area. It was a suicide attack. The bomber wrapped a chadar [cloak] around his body and came running into the training area and exploded himself where recruits had gathered for training.

"Ten to 15 recruits have been martyred," he said.

According to the same source, the bomb went off on a parade ground next to an army camp in the town of Dargai.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.

Dargai is a known stronghold of an Islamist group that has links to al-Qaeda.

Only last month, security forces attacked a madrasa, or religious school, run by the group in a tribal area near the Afghan border that killed about 80 suspected militants

A man with explosives strapped to his body ran up to soldiers doing calisthenics and blew himself up Wednesday at an army training center in the town of Dargai
PESHAWAR, Pakistan: An investigation into a deadly attack on Pakistani troops waging a counterinsurgency campaign along the Afghan border was progressing well, an investigator said Thursday, as a previously unknown group said "Pakistani Taliban" were responsible for the attack, a suicide bombing that killed 42 soldiers.
A man with explosives strapped to his body ran up to soldiers doing calisthenics and blew himself up Wednesday at an army training center in the town of Dargai, about 100 kilometers, or 60 miles, north of Peshawar, the capital of North-West Frontier Province.
At least 42 troops were killed; 20 more were wounded, with some in critical condition.
"Body parts of the suicide bomber have been collected for DNA test," said a security official, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the case, at the training center. "We have vital clues, and the investigations are proceeding well."
Suspicion immediately fell on pro- Taliban militants who vowed revenge for an airstrike on a madrasa last week that killed at least 80 people in the Bajaur tribal region to the northwest.
The government claimed that the school was being used to train pro- Taliban guerrillas, but local residents said almost all the victims were children or teenagers.
Several hours after the suicide attack, an unidentified man telephoned a Pakistani journalist, Rahimullah Yousafzai, in Peshawar and claimed responsibility.
The man said "Pakistani Taliban" had carried out the bombing to avenge the attack. He identified the group's leader as Abu Kalim Muhammad Ansari.
Security officials said they were not familiar with either the group or the man who is said to be its leader.
The caller also claimed that 275 volunteers had offered to take part in suicide bombings after the attack, media reports said.
The violence marked a sharp escalation in the low-intensity conflict between Pakistani forces and militants in the semiautonomous tribal area, which straddles the border, and sparked fears that the war in Afghanistan may be spilling over into Pakistan.
Dargai is considered a stronghold of an outlawed Islamic group, Tehrik-e- Nifaz-e-Shariat Mohammadi.
The U.S. government condemned Wednesday's attack, and a White House spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, said America would continue to "stand with the government and people of Pakistan in this struggle" against terrorism

The only thing that can save Pakistan is the immediate resignation of General Musharraf and handing over the country to an interim  caretaker government which will rule the country until an election is held within 2-3 months.

It is a fundamental and basic right of a people of any country to determine who should govern them.  Also the people have a right to change the Government whenever they wish.  The country belongs to the people and not to an individual or group of individuals "“ whether they may be Generals or Kings.

Sadly peaceful means to bring about a change has been blocked by the Military takeover of Pakistan .  The only option that remains is a violent one where everyone suffers.  Will General Musharraf resign forthwith and let a civil society take root in the country?

After all, Pakistan was formed through the efforts of the people of Pakistan and the country can only be sustained through the will of the people and not through force.

The murder of civilians in Bajaur where students were murdered was too much to stomach.  Pakistani Government falsely justified the attack by saying that they were targeting militants.  Similarl explanations are given by US and Zionist state of Israel when they attack civilians in Iraq and Palestine respectively.

It was made clear that as a result of this atrocity that people were in a revengeful mood.  Instead of appointing a Commission of Enquiry, General Musharraf banned the entry of foreign and local journalists to visit the scene giving further proof that there was a crime committed and the Government was intent to cover it up.

In the absence of an enquiry, the matters now have been exacerbated and what we is the natural outcome of events.  I refer to the dozens of soldiers killed in an explosion at an army camp.  This we understand is a result of a bomb detonated by a person killing himself http://english.aljazeera.net (November 8,2006).  This is exactly what is happening in occupied Iraq and Palestine .
