Quotes on Musharraf's resignation

2008-08-19

Pervez Musharraf announced his resignation as Pakistani president on Monday. Here is what he and others in Pakistan had to say about it.

«I am going with the satisfaction that whatever I have done was for the people and for the country. I hope the nation and the people will forgive my mistakes.» - Pervez Musharraf.

«Today the shadow of dictatorship that has prevailed for long over this country, that chapter has been closed. It hasn't happened very easily. We passed through a long struggle and we had come very close to the process of initiating impeachment.»  - Information Minister Sherry
Rehman, a member of the main ruling Pakistan People's Party.

«The crimes of Musharraf against the nation, against the judiciary, against democracy and against rule of law in the country cannot be forgiven by any party or individual.» - Ahsan Iqbal, a senior official with the second largest party in the ruling coalition, which has sought a treason trial for Musharraf.

«I am extremely proud of my country. Soon after my mother's martyrdom, I had said that democracy is the best revenge and today it is proved. The biggest hurdle in the way of democracy has been removed.» - Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, son of slain ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and her official successor as head of the Pakistan People's Party.

«He was a gentleman, and that's why he quit in a decent way. Let's see now who takes over as president. I bet someone worse might take the office.» - Ameer Alam, a grocery store employee in the southern city of Karachi.

«We must thank Allah that now he has gone. Now we hope that peace would return to the tribal and northern areas. He has killed a lot of innocent people. He was the enemy of Muslims.» - Afzal Khan, a gas station employee in Karachi.

«God has saved us from this cursed person, and he should not be allowed to go abroad. (If he goes into exile) I think he should be tried in absentia and convicted for abrogating the constitution, for detaining many people.»  - Abdul Qadeer Khan, the Pakistani scientist still under de facto house arrest for allegedly leaking nuclear secrets to Iran, Libya North Korea.

The BillionaireUnlikelyTwins hope that by easing out Musharraf they would strengthen the fledgling democracy in Pakistan. Their newfound love for democracy is suspect. The TransplantedOne wanted to become Amir ul Momineen and the The Walking Grin's billions have been whitewashed by the NRO. - Temporal

We condemn the pressurized resignation of President. Support the only wonderful president our country had. We still love Pervaiz Musharraf. - SMS circulating in Musharraf lovers circles.

you are comparing dog with man of dignity, this Muloon Musharraf tried his level best not to resign, and this resign came from him due to immense pressure and not because of some dignity or "sub say pehlay Pakistan", you must be ashamed of your thinking about Musharraf, this man destroyed the country and was committed to continue but this was immense pressure that he had to resign.
He is a chief justice of Pakistan and inshahAllah truth will prevail and he will be restored as chief justice inshahAllah.

Self-respect is a question of recognizing that anything worth having has a price. Ex Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry should learn lesson from the resignation of Pervaiz Musharaf. For the sake of country and country's political stability he should withdraw his name from the restoring of Judges movement. From the last few years Pakistan is going through serious threats of terrorism, talibilization and economical recession. Few times we also had been getting serious war threats from our neighbors. But priority of our some political parties and our civil society activists is focusing on secondary issues. Look at the ex army general Pervaiz Musharf, how many times he withdraws himself for the sake of country. On his promises, he took retirement from his Army key position, he removed his uniform and holds fairest election ever held in the history of Pakistan. Now again for the sake of country and the stability of political system he resigned from the President office. Generally we expect these kinds of behavior from democratic and civil society leaders but fortunately we have also people in our Army who believes in democracy. Ex chief Justice Choudar Iftkhiar should remember current Judges are like him, they are Pakistani too, They went to the same school of thoughts where he went and they became Judges through PCO as same like him. Ex Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry should remember he became Judge after taking the oath under PCO. Personal ego and agenda should not be a part of Judges movement. He also needs to understand involvement of political parties and their desires behind this movement. For the sake of country and its political stability, I humbly request Mr. Choudary Ifthikar to withdraw from his demand to restore himself as a Chief Justice of Pakistan.
