Shalimar hotel is a nice and cozy Pakistani restaurant in Troy, New York. After a long day my evenings are spent at the corner table with a hot cup of tea and conversation with Javed Sahib (owner of the hotel). He shares his fond memories of the good old days in Pakistan while I talk about the present gloomy times.  Who is the culprit? was the question that popped up after reading a small news feed in Dawn where the proud sons of Pakistan Army beat the senses out of a young DMG officer to feed their inflated ego. On 8th july 2009, Ali  Qamar a 35th common DMG officer posted as Camp Incharge Sheikh Yaseen IDP Camp, Mardan was vandalized, brutally beaten, physically and verbally abused by army officers and jawans, while on duty.  The two sons of the nation Lt Haider  and Major Asad of 32 cavalry were apparently tired of fighting against terrorism/ Taliban and their idea of taking a break was to show their muscles to a civilian officer, who is also a son of the same nation, and who was doing official duty when attacked. It is indeed a shame to see the petty ego of these officers.  This is not the first instant when army has attacked a DMG officer  or civilian institutions.  But how can we question these junior  officers when their top brass Ayub Khan, Zia ul Haq, Musharraf already abused the country.

Atif Majeed, a fulbright scholar, after hearing this incident shared this story, " During Ayub khan regime one poet came to Faiz Sahib who was smoking at the Pak tea house. He said Faiz sahib meray pass aap kay liyee baree buree khaber hai? (I have a bad news for you) Faiz asked what happened? He said Pakistan ab mazeed nahi chul sakta. Yeh sun kay Faiz sahib nay baray sakoon say kush lagaya aur kehnay lugay meray pass thumaray liyee is say zaida buree khabar hai aur woh yeh kay yeh mulk hameesha isi taran chalta rahay ga." Faiz sahib statement is very much true even today.

It is believed that Pakistan Army is the strongest and dominant institution in Pakistan. This white elephant takes 20% of the national budget to protect us from the foreign elements. We can witness their so called war against Talibans where they are unable to control their own creation, displacing millions of IDPs and outrageous spillover effect in the form of suicidal bombings in the urban hubs of Pakistan and above that all they vent their anger by beating a DMG officer.  USA is fighting war against terrorism and Pakistan army is fighting a perpetual war against democracy. Every democratic leader has been forced to abdicate by army.  The generals ruled the country for 34 years out of 62 years of its total existence. Dr. Ayesha Siddiqua, in her book  " Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan's Military Economy ", mentions that army's private business assets are worth around $17 bn and it owns a handsome share of the country's business and land. The top brass, as a result, appear to be more interested in leveraging control over businesses, properties and politics. If this is the mind set how we are suppose to win any kind of war against any enemy.

Pakistan's three Infamous A's: The Army, Allah and America. We blame the Islamic fundamentalists and USA for all the chaos in Pakistan. But if we take a closer look the real culprit seems to be Pakistan army. Every political scientist claims that democracy is an answer to most of the problems in Pakistan but there are certain pre requisites to practice democracy.  Thanks to Pakistan army it has not only destroyed but paralyzed the political thinking of people. It is like a ruthless corporation whose objective is to maximize profit. The way Zia ul Haq paralyzed the country no dictator has ever been able to achieve, he changed the very character and role of Pakistan army. The third "˜A' America was the biggest sponsor of Islamic fundamentalism, religious terrorism and Islamisation of Pakistan Army. A breed of Taliban was created to fight the Russians and to please the US because the army was getting huge amount of dollars in aid. The business plan was pretty sustainable as high quality heroine from the poppy grown in the wastelands of war in Afghanistan and the areas along the 1500km long Pak-Afghan border. The black capital coming from the drugs trade was shared with different warlords and the leaders of different Islamic fundamentalist parties and Islamic mercenary outfits involved in this reactionary insurgency.

Musharraf regime is another golden chapter of Pakistan's history; billions of US dollars were given to Pakistan Army to curb terrorism. Pakistan army again made us proud as terrorism not only increased but crossed the borders and entered our cities. It changed the demography as fear lurks in every heart. People are scared to socialize or go to any public place.  One of the key causes of the judicial and political crisis in his regime was the disappearances of ordinary citizens at the hands of military intelligence. Zaid Zafar presented this scary situation through a 24 minutes documentary "Missing in Pakistan".  The documentary highlighted how an average Pakistani citizen can easily draw a stark connection between US ideals and policy with the realities in Pakistan.

What right does the army have to intervene in the affairs of civil administration? Their job is to protect the borders and not abuse the civilians. If they are requisitioned to assist the civil administration they should be confined to supporting not taking over! If they had done their job at the borders we would not have terrorism within Pakistan. It takes ages to build an institution but few people destroy it in the name of their egos or vested interests. Islam gives us the message of peace and harmony and if the pivotal institutions are unable to work in harmony then we are destroying Pakistan with our own hands. It's time to realize our weaknesses and restrain from past mistakes that have brought Pakistan to its present state.

Army is blamed as institution because it does not take action against such officers. For example Consequences of questioning a major By Ahmad Noorani Friday, May 27, 2011 ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Airport Police on Tuesday night illegally detained a lady lecturer for the whole night just because she had a minor traffic argument with a Pakistan Army major who called the Military Police and ordered her arrest without any charge or FIR. Waqar Nisar, Station House Officer of the Airport Police Station, where officials of the Pakistan Army forcibly kept the young lady lecturer for the whole night between Tuesday and Wednesday, told The News that it was the Military Police which ‘asked’ to keep the lady lecturer under arrest and initiate proceedings against her. The incident involved only a Pakistan Army regular officer Maj Tubbassim who was driving in an indecent and recklessness manner and overtook the car of the lady lecturer in a dangerous way. The lady lecturer stopped the car and protested which became a nightmare for her as she was ordered to be arrested and was taken to Police Station Airport. Sources told The News that after media came to know about the incident on Wednesday morning and presence of Pakistan Army at Airport Police Station, some lady police constables were called to the police station. “Yes, if some regular army official will quarrel with some civilian in boundary of a police station, that police station is the only legal authority to proceed and take any action allowed under law of the land,” said SHO Police Station Airport Rawalpindi. Waqar further said that he couldn’t utter the name as he didn’t remember but some Military Police officials had contacted him and visited his police station for the action against the lady. When Waqar was asked under which law of the land he had kept a lady at his police station for the whole night without even registration of the FIR, Waqar simply smiled. “See army official have reached the spot,” Waqar said. Waqar further said that later the lady also gave a written application which was made part of the record. “But, in the morning both the parties agreed not to proceed further, so everything is closed now,” Waqar added. When asked that after both sides gave application whether army officer Tabbassum also came to the police station or whether the lady was only kept in confinement, he replied that army officer had sent military police officials and he did not come himself. Asked when the lady was kept at the police station for the whole night she obviously had agreed to go home silently because of immense pressure and treatment she got from Police, Waqar said that both parties took applications back so he couldn’t say anything regarding ‘pressure’. Asked whether he was ashamed of what had happened at his police station and whether at any point he had the courage to stand against the illegal orders and let the woman go to her home in the night, he simply smiled again and pointed towards the army personnel. Spokesman of the Pakistan Army and DG-ISPR and other members were approached by The News the whole day on Thursday but there was no response whatsoever despite sending of text messages. In the light of above news of THE NEWS, the statement of author is absolutely right. While afraid of fighting the enemy our army conquers our own country. Army officials behave like terrorists. Actually they are so. As well as sacrifice is considered, every Army including that of Israeil, USA , India, Iraq, sacrifice its soldiers. Many Police officers die while performing their duties it does not mean that you don't criticize corruption in police. Why don't you treat army at par. We did so. and result is before us. We think army is strong But it failed. It failed in 1971 , it failed in Kargil, it failed in estopping US forces to attack Abbottabad and intrude into our country which is the purpose of keeping army and they failed in stopping terrorism. Why? the reason is simple, when military police is busy in torturing personal enemies of army personnels, intelligence is busy in working to the benefit of army personals' girlfriends. Then how can we fight. Fighting needs power. Power of weapons. Power of motivation. Power of Islam, Power of Emotions. Power of morality. Our army is devoid of all these. Islam is not name. It is character. Patience, forgiveness, humbleness, politeness, law abiding nature, bow to the will of ALLAH Almighty. This is Islam. This is what makes army to attain victory despite low in weapons. This caused the victory of Muslims at Badar. But our army has always been failed. It is a business institution. It protects its officers illegal acts against civilians. May ALLAH Almighty help us. In joint session your officers say it is government that has to order us, should we explode the drones, but they also say that then government has to face the repurcussions. What is this actually they were warning us that they can hit the drones but cannot cannot cannot answer the reaction. So don't do anything. You say fighting terrorists needs guts. Yes. Sure. But this is why we keep army spend upon them billions of rupees give plots of millions to them as gift, let them trade through Fauji foundation to the prejudice of civilian trader, enjoy golf clubs, free medical aid, Gambling (Tambola) at clubs etc. Despite this they attack us kill us beat us, conquer our nation every time don't think that we are human being, don't respect our judiciary. they are useless. May ALLAH save our nation. May ALLAH save our Pakistan. May ALLAH save our people from cruelty and injustice and corruption. http://www.wikimir.com/muhammad-taj

we are waiting for the response from other side. but i know there will be the same dead silence which we saw when a captain raped a Lady Dr in Baluchistan. we have habit of forgetting every thing, that silence lead to the death of Bugti and insurgency in Baluchistan, we can only hope that this will not happen this time. We are waiting for an ISPR response over the incident and if no response comes then the first party's statement will stand True.

Do you people know what really happened in Mardan? Have you heard what Major Asad and Lt Haider have to say about the incident? Making decision after hearing only one party in unfair.

"The two sons of the nation, Lt Haider and Major Asad of 32 cavalry were apparently tired of fighting against terrorism/Taliban and their idea of taking a break was ..." making statements like this while sitting in a hotel in Newyork is very easy. But to fight terrorists require guts. What do you think about the feelings of the parents of these officers fighting terrorists? Criticism is very easy, doing something useful is not so....

Army as an institution is very rude and w we have seen hell of public demonstrations of it. I am not talking regarding current operations or American war scenario. I have witnessed many instances in my city Multan, where we have cantt area, how brutally they treat DIRTY civilian. Mr NrQazi, If this act is an act of individual then why the hell no action or statement has been issued by ISPR yet.

Dear Aneel or whoever is the author of this article
While its unfair to take law into ones own hands on a minor conflict, it is also unfair to stereotype the whole army as an institution.

The problem is not army or DMG. The problem is we as a nation have this strange psychology of doing whatever we can and getting away with it. Be it DMG, army, income tax, customs, car registration office, KMC tax office, professional tax office, information ministry, etc.etc.....
Long ago I had gone to Abbottabad for getting my domicile made. Since I refused to pay an agent the bribe for gwetting it done, I got the whole process done by hand myself. When I was ready to go to DC sahab for signature, I sent in my card through his PA. he called me in and went thru the documentation and found a minor error. I requested him please let me back in as soon as I get back to which he agreed. I was back in 15 minutes and his PA told me that sahab has gone to Mansehra for 2 days....& I was a serving government officer at that time. Hope u get the message.
