One day I was volunteering at a nearby school and had visited the JK/SK class with kids ranging from 4 to 5 yrs. old. After visiting with the teacher whom I had known for about 5 years now was so happy to see me as always that she greeted me at the door with a warm hug. It was interesting to see these little kids interacting and playing with one another while some fought and pulled toys from each other. It was rather cute and reminded me of the time when I started my eldest son in JK/SK and how times had changed even more so.

The teacher had been telling me about the various kids and the various behaviours that each of them possessed. Every single child was different and unique in his or her own way. She shared with me some scenarios of the types of drama that went on during the first week of school as it was many of the childrens' first experience coming into a classroom environment. She told me how some were afraid to approach others, some were shy, some would just crawl underneath the desks and stay there for a while crying. There was another one she told me about that would start crying once his mother would leave him and he would cry until he would start gasping for air and then he would begin to vomit so that the teacher would call his mom and his mom would come and take him home. Wowow, now that's what I call smart kids. I think we underestimate the minds of these children nowadays because even they are ten steps ahead of us and know how to play their cards right.

After spending about an hour talking to the teacher she asked me to do her a favour and wanted me to read a book to the kids so that she could get a few things done. Now I was a bit nervous only because I had over 25 children staring right at me ready to listen to me read to them while some of them would continue to tease each other. It was fun watching their behaviour at this stage. I would just smile and find them sweet and think at times how relaxing and carefree their lives were at this age without liabilities, responsibilities and stresses of any kind. As I read, they would ask me questions and ask so many 'why' questions for which I would not always have the answer. After finishing up the book, some of the kids got up to sit in my lap while others wanted to give me a hug. I asked one of the childrens' their name and he said " Mera Naam Zain Ali Syed Hai " and the teacher asked me to ask him why he didn't do his homework and with an innocent reply he said " mein soh gaya tha " ( I fell asleep) while he kept smiling so innocently which again I found to be so sweet. Then after observing everything another child asked me " Aunty aap Urdu bolthee hai " and when I said yes, the look on his face was brighter than a lightbulb. He introduced himself to me and said " Mein Tahir Ayub Hoon...Tahir Ayub" ( I am Tahir Ayub) ....awwwwww. ...so sweeeeet :) and again their conversations were so innocent that I could not help but smile and smile some more. These kids really brightened up my day and I left the classroom smiling as well although I didn't have a passion to teach kids at all and neither the patience and endurance. I prayed that they would grow up and turn into responsible and intellectual young adults. Wouldn't that be a dream to know that one was able to help out in one way or another?

When I think back to when I was starting school for the first time, I was so shy and so obedient. I always did as I was told. But today, the first question kids ask is " WHY". I remember we dared not have the guts to question much and just went about our merry way and followed directions and instructions as we were advised by our teachers and parents alike. I think at that time teachers also really cared a lot. They took out the extra time to look after each child in their class and their needs, but today I find things to be so different. They don't allocate the time or the patience and are not recognized for their hardwork and dedication the way they used to be so they don't bother to go that extra mile anymore which I find unfortunate.

How times have changed? We could now only hope and pray for the best for our future generations.

Thanks for reading folks and have an awesome day~!
